Easter salute to spreading peace across nations
Pope John Paul II in his Easter message lauded the thirst for freedom that toppled dictatorships and urged dialogue for Lithuania to gain independence. In Romania and East Germany vibrant expressions of freedom marked the holiday as Catholics in Kiev were allowed Easter services for the first time in 44 years. The pope spoke in Lithuanian, calling for peace for Lithuania's children and dialogue with Moscow, while tens of thousands in Rome and across Europe celebrated amidst renewed tensions and war warnings in Beirut.
