National math standards urge four years of high school math
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics proposes four years of required high school math and an hour daily for elementary grades. The Standards 2000 outline grade level goals in geometry algebra measurement and data analysis, stressing critical thinking over memorization and suggesting calculators in all grades. Critics say the plan lacks concrete year by year benchmarks and risks vague guidance.
