Colbert Hills golf course nears opening in Manhattan
Ground broken in 1998 for a 300 acre 18 hole course in Manhattan as Kansas State University prepares Colbert Hills for a May opening. PGA Tour backed away from managing the course but will allow a licensed PGA Tour Collegiate Course. Course plans include 7525 yard length with multiple tee positions, native limestone yardage markers, prairie habitat with controlled burns, and ongoing environmental studies by Kansas State researchers.

Wellsville athlete sets school discus mark at Emporia Relays
Wellsville's Jeff Walker broke the school discus record with a 160-3 throw for third place at the Emporia Relays, eclipsing the 160-1 mark set by Dave Holtwick in 1972. The Eagles won the 400, 800 and spring medley relays and placed second in the 1600 while Williamsburg standouts Adam Howard and Nick Rodina topped their events in pole vault and 3200.

The Wellsville girls freshmen and sophomores finished seventh at the Prairie View Invitational in La Cygne as Anderson County won the nine team meet with 112 points. Wellsville totaled 27 points with Kristen Hale posting 74-15 in discus and 74-116 in javelin. Megan Newland led in long jump with 12- and 400 relay team ran 59.3.

Wrestler Wieneke eyes Navy camp toward Olympic goal
Wieneke, a Nebraska bound wrestler, is attempting to qualify for the Olympic Trials in javelin while earning a Navy team spot.
