Israel vows sustained West Bank offensive amid U S demand for troop drawdown
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told the Knesset that the West Bank campaign will continue despite U S pressure to begin withdrawing troops. Helicopters pounded the Jenin camp near Bethlehem's Nativity Church as fighting raged in Nablus. Israeli forces reported heavy clashes, with hundreds of militants, several casualties, and houses destroyed. Clerics inside the Nativity compound remained hostages in a tense standoff, while fire damaged a nearby chapel area.
