Chaney Continues Fight Over Use Value Appraisal
Sen Bert Chaney D Hutchinson accuses Senate Republicans of stalling debate on a use value appraisal bill until lawmakers return April 24 to allow special interests to pressure members. He and Sen Jack Janssen D Lyons reiterated opposition after helping defeat the measure in committee and securing 21 votes against a floor debate. The bill has been amended into another measure and will face Senate discussion when the session resumes. Chaney warns use value taxation remains a volatile issue and calls for broad study of property taxes before special concessions to farmland are considered.
