Cigarette blamed for downtown Lawrence warehouse blaze
Lawrence Fire Chief Jim McSwain said a cigarette in a bucket behind Wheatfields Bakery likely started a fire that destroyed an 80 year old warehouse behind the restaurant and caused smoke damage to Wheatfields and nearby buildings. Five firefighters suffered heat injuries, 25 restaurant customers evacuated, and about 50 firefighters fought the blaze. The warehouse collapsed due to a roof with no center support, described as a firefighter killer by McSwain.
