Augusta Ga AP Tom Watson enters the 45th Masters unhappy with his season despite a strong career run. He notes no wins this year with $60,214 earnings and only three top tens in seven starts. Watson cites mechanical flaws and uncomfortable setup at address as the cause of reduced confidence and form.
Worris News Service reports Kansas sportsmen criticize the Fish and Game Commission as unresponsive. Legislation seeks to elect the commissioner or create a bipartisan appointment system. Five commissioners serve four-year terms with no salary, only daily stipends and travel allowances. Bill Hawes chairs the board, and member since May 1976 is 49-year-old Bill Hawes from Smith Center.
Hawes, appointed by Gov. Bennett to finish the term of Fred Sears and later to a full term, has chaired the Fish and Game Commission since April 1981. A lifelong sportsman active in wildlife conservation, he defends staff studies, opposes broad political electing of commissioners, and supports a new Milford Lake hatchery to boost tourism and local fishing.
The Williamsburg junior high hosted the Appanoose Quadrangular with team scores listing Pomona and Marais des Cygnes Valley among top placers. Individual event summaries show winners in pole vault long jump discus shot put and sprints for both boys and girls divisions, with multiple teams receiving top marks across events.
Ottawa High won its first golf meet of the year and topped Paola and Louisburg in a nine hole triangular. Dennis Nelson led Ottawa with 41, Allan Reyes 44, and Mark Badgley 45 tied for third. Ottawa JV also topped with 212, Paola 220. The next event is the 10 team OHL Invitational at Ottawa County Club.
Williamsburg leads medley relay with 2 18 and 2 21 28 for Appanoose and Valley runners close behind. In the 4th grade 100 dash Moore of Williamsburg wins in 13.58 with Green and ufford of Appanoose close second and Brown also from Appanoose third. Taylor and Barringer from Williamsburg and Appanoose combined for a 15.40.
Kansas City coach Cotton Fitzsimmons remolds the team after Phil Ford injury as the Kings win their first NBA playoff series game 2-1 over Portland and await a semifinal with Phoenix. Houston at San Antonio also opens West semis, while Chicago hosts Boston and Milwaukee visits Philadelphia seeking 2-0 leads.
Ottawa Swim Club divers wrap up winter season at the Missouri Valley Division I championships in Olathe. Randy Brewer won the 13 14 Boys 100 Breast in 1 04.74 AAAA time, earning a spot at the All Star meet in Columbia, Mo. He also posted several top finishes, with Jerry Hofman, April Harris, Scott Davidson, and younger Brewer teammates scoring in multiple events.
Nineteen Ottawa grapplers placed in Hiawatha sub district. Qualifiers advance to district at Hayden High School Topeka next Saturday. In eight and under division Toby Aguirre first Jason Cox third Jerry Lynn fifth. 43-pound Chad Mitchell second. 55-pound Roy English third. 50-pound Jesus Rivera fourth. 70-pound Brian Cole second. 40-pound Travis Allen second. 95-pound unnamed second. 10-and-under Barry Baldwin first. 64-pound Justin Lynn second Dustin Sullivan fourth. 12-and-under Wayne Walker third. 14-and-under Mike Albright first. 100-pound Phil Geist second. 120-pound Richard DeLaTorre third. 125-pound Jimmy Johnson second. 135-pound Kris Patton second. 175-pound Kris Patton second.
