Block Reaffirms Intentions To Overhaul Farm Policy

Washington AP The Reagan administration vows a thorough overhaul of farm policy this year and rejects simply extending current law as Congress stalls. Secretary Block says a budget deal gives Capitol Hill more leeway to craft new legislation and outlines a wheat farmer referendum if no bill passes by August. If no new laws, permanent 1938 and 1949 programs would take effect with tough regulation and price supports. The plan targets $52 billion in the new fiscal year and $295.4 billion over three years, with substantial cuts in farm supports and credit programs, aiming for a market oriented reform stance.
