GOP senators reject Medicare prescription benefit
The Senate defeated a Democratic push to require a Medicare drug benefit before voting on broad tax cuts. The 51 to 49 vote failed due to a 60 vote threshold, with all 45 Democrats and six Republicans supporting the measure. The debate highlighted tensions over tax cuts, Social Security surpluses, and the elderly amid budget negotiations with the House.

States consultants cheat kids Medicaid funds siphoned
The General Accounting Office reports states keep a portion of Medicaid reimbursements for health care services to poor children, with schools often receiving only a fraction of the dollars spent. Auditors note private consultants charge 9 to 12 percent commissions and warn that improper billing practices may be incentivized under current arrangements. The GAO findings accompany Senate Finance hearings on the issue.
