The industry abandons large traditional plants for small modern facilities near livestock centers. Swift & Co halves Kansas City workers as it closes 25 plants and opens 260 elsewhere, boosting efficiency and expanding into nonmeat lines. Cudahy and Hormel refocus on profitable segments, while overall profitability remains low in 1966 with an earnings to sales average of 0.7 percent.
