Sanderson Rites Held In PageGraveside services were conducted at 10 a.m. Sept. 12 at the Page Cemetery for Raleigh J. β€œRod” Sanderson, who retired in Page in 1961 after 30 jfears of government service.Most of those years were with the Department of the Interior. His career included service with the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Gila River Reservation, War Relocation Authority, Foreign Economic Administration in Saudi Arabia, and the Geological Survey in Arizona, California and U-tah. He was the recipient of the Department of the Interior's Distinguished Service A-ward in 1954 for saving three persons from drowning.Since his retirement, Sanderson had lived in Phoenix. He died of cancer Sept. 10 in Memorial Hospital there and the family has suggested that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.Known locally as a power boat pilot, he had led several parties through the ColoradoHe was born in Farmington, River rapids.N. M., and was brought to Phoenix by his parents in 1906 in a covered wagon. His mother, Mrs Rebecca E. Sanderson, of Phoenix, preceded him ip death by only three days. His father died in 1953.Survivors included his wife, Lois, a former editor of the Page Signal in Page, and correspondent for the Deseret News; three daughters, Mrs. Helen Neisess, Fullerton, Calif, and Mrs. Karen Barwick and Mrs. Judie Barwick, both of Phoenix, and both formerly of Page; and five sons: Larry J. Sanderson and Jerry D. Sanderson, both of Page; Bill B., of EH Centro, Calif., Richard A. of Phoenix, and Raymond F., Flagstaff. All three of the latter, Bill, Richard and Raymond, were former Page residents. Twenty-three grandchildren also survive.Rod Sanderson recently held a reunion in Page with three of his four brothers and other members of his immediate family. A highlight of the gathering was boating and fishing on Lake Powell. Sanderson was one of the first men assigned to Page by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation and eagerly watched the building of the Glen Canyon Bridge and the Glen Canyon Dam and the eventual taming of the mighty Colorado River.Dan McCain, minister of the Church of Christ, conducted the graveside services, as well as the Memorial services at Phoenix. A chorus from the local church sang.
