AMERICAN LEGION MEMBERSHEAR CAPT. KIDD’S ADDRESSON SPANISH-AMERICAN WARBend's Oommittee Reports On Bestowing Loving Cup; Major Cole Designated As Award Chairman; Minstrel Set For Early April(From Wednesday’s Dally)The feature of the meeting of McFarland Post No. 2, American Legion, Tuesday night, was an address by Capt. E. L. Kidd on the subject of his personal remlnlscenes of the Spanish-American war. Oapt. Kidd was commander of Company “F, 1st Louisiana infantry, which went to the war from Ruston, Giving a concise and authoritative account of the causes and principal events of our struggle with Spain, Capt. Kidd's remarks were spiced with intimate personal anecdotes of the experiences of himself and other Ruston citizens who were participants and held the keen interest of his audience. At the close of his address. Capt. Kidd was given a rising vote of thanks and urged to give a similar talk on other phases of the war at an early date. ,S. H. Griffin, who was first sergeant of Company “F” during the Spanish-American war, was also present at the meeting. The post voted unanimouslythat these two gentlemen as well as all other loral Spanish-American war veterans be extended a permanent invitation to attend all iuture meetings of the American Legion.The committee appointed to formulate plans for the bestowing of the Legion’s loving cup award made its final report and was discharged. The report was adopted by the post and reads as follows;Ruston, La.. Mar. 18, 1930. J. P. Cole, Commander,McFarland Post No. 2,American Legion,Ruston, La.Dear Sir;—Your committee, to formulate a plan for the bestowing of a loving cup by this post, each year, to that person accomplishing the greatest good for this community, begs to report as follows:1. The territory pertaining to this post shall comprise Lincoln parish, Louisiana.2. The award shall consist of a loving cup to cost not more than $50.00.3. The period to be covered by the first award shall be the year ending June 30th 1930.4. The award shall be given to that citizen of Lincoln parish who shall have done the greatest amount of good for the parish during that year.5. The award to be made by a committee composed of one representative from each of the following organizations:American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Ruston Chamber of Commerce, Business and Professional Women’s Club, Ruston Golf Club, Music Club, Cosmos Club, Pierian Club, Ruston High School Parent-Teachers’ Association, Eastland Parent-Teachers’ Association, Hlllcrest Parent-Teachers’ Association and Klwanis Club. The members representing the American Legion shall be chairman of the committee. Seven members of the committee shall constitute a quorum.6. In case the committee fails to make a selection, McFarland Post No. 2 reserves the right to make the selecion.7. After the selection has been made, the post shall determine the date and manner of making the award.8. It is the opinion of this committee that should there be no candidate having outstanding qualifications over other candidates preference should be given to that candidate having accomplished the most for this community during the several years prior to that for which the award is made.Your committee recommands that the member to represent this post be appointed immediately and proper notice given to the other organizations in order that the committee can start work at the earliest possible date.
