The Jal FlareVOLUME 2JAL, NEW MEXICO, THURSDAY. MARCH 7, 19402c A COPYNTY-SIXTH ISSUEJal Marks Water System's BirthdayThe Long And The Short Of ItBy Emma Jackson LongA LONG with the gTowth and ^^d^elofJHWnt of Jal there has been much reform in crime.A strange and amusing jail is it that Jal has and it is believed that it goes a long way in promoting peace and quiet. When a man gets too much to drink and gets “rambunctious” the officers take control of him and lock him in the city jail. Now the Jal Jail for a long time has been a joke as it has a big hole burned in one side of it. When a drunk wakes up and finds himself in jail and sees the hole inviting him, out he crawls. But the story does not end here. Su-pris ngly enough, the sober-drunk knows that he has sneaked out of jail and in order to keep from getting thrown back in on a charge of breaking jail he remains quiet, and orderly from then on and everybody lives happily ever after. When a tramp comes through and spends his last dime drinking too much, he too is thrown in jail. When the tramp crawls out he knows there is danger of his bong caught again so he very quietly slips out of town, not to return, and here you have riddance of rubbish.Chuck Wagon Feed To Mark AnniversaryThings Were Good A Year Ago New GolfBy Emma Jackson Long When being reminded that Jal will be celebrating ita second an* nual Water Works Celebration, people w’ant to know what the program is.It will not be as elaborate as last year but the sp:rit will be the same. A festive air will prevail and people will buy pie and coffee downtown instead of going home for lunch and a real Chuck Wagon dinner will be served by the fire boys on the vacant lot north of the city hall from a real chuck box. They pi in to serve son-of-a-gun, fried steaks, brown beans, buns and coffee. Everybody is invited to eat with the fire boys so “Mom” or the cook may have the night off and attend the big dance fresh as a daisy. The funds will go to help pay for the fire truck.People cannot forget the good time they had at the big free barbecue last year at the celebration. They still grin when they think of how they were pinched together and jostled about in a stifling, jamming crowding mass to secure a plate of barbecue and beans. Yes, it makes a funny picture but nobody got hurt and everyone seems to like to remember how after trying for an hour or two to get food he went up town and ate one of the bestmealsof his life. The dance was even more fun than the barbecue with guestsThey Look Better NowAll of the Jal citizens will look back Friday to this same date last year and smile because of the fun they had during the celebration of the Water system which was just completed.Because of the response of the merchants, the city officials and the Jal Flare, the first water-works celebration will always go down in history as one of the most memorable days in Jal.Five thousand people thronged the streets of Jal enjoying the all-day program which had been arranged. The broadcast where city officials talked about Jal and its future and the big barbecue were two of the outstanding events of the day. People looked into the future of Jal and predicted bigger and better thingsCourse Plans Discussed(CONTINl’ED ON PACE 3)Jimmie Durant's Band Promises Fine DanceMost important part of the Jal Water Works Celebration this year will be the Firemen’s Ball held in the High School Gymnasium with Jimmy Durant and his twelve piece orchestra from Roswell playing the music.Jimmie Durant’s orchestra will make the dance a success. He is well known in thisl— -section of the country, havingfJEFORE I cam© out to this counti-T”, I used to report on the high courts of Texas, and among them is the Court of Criminal Appeals, where a Jal boy’s fate is now resting. The case was appealed in December, but as yet there’s been no ruling. This indicates that the court is looking for some way to reverse the extreme penalty a Ward County jury inflicted on the Ely boy. When the court spends th:s long studying a case, it's a pretty good sign that they’re having a hard time finding a legal reason to send the cq,se back, when they feel it should he sent back.We will probably be reading before long that a new trial has The Odd Fellows plan to start con-played in Hobbs several times. Most recently he played for thePresident’s Ball there.Script for the dance is $1.50 and tickets may be bought in advance from any of the firemen.A large crowd from surrounding towns is expected to attend the dance. This dance is not only for pleasure Hut the proceeds will go into insurance which will protect every home in town. It will surrounding! f)a'd on t*,t‘ note which is pastA. C. They live in the country south of the Continental camp.Jal Golfers are still not quite satisfied with their present course. In the first place it is leased and very few improvements can be made upon it as it is n«t permanently owned. Secondly tha golfers had hoped to find a place nearer Jal where they can leave their business for a short trek across the golf course and if they are needed they will be quickly and easily found.J. M. Whitworth, secretary of the Jal Golf Club, has been shopping around recently to find a better place to make a permanent course. Hugo Just's has offered to construct a course five miles out of town at his water well on the old Eaton Ranch and build a swimming pool if the members will build a'club house. This idea is not being discouraged but the golfers still would like to have a course clqser to town. There are several desirable spots but so far the club has not been able to secure a one of them.Five Jal Area Locations Feature Weekfirst of the month. Also after the tenth of the month a ten per cent fee will be added to nil bills not paid before or on that date.
