DEATH BY DROWNINGThe Des Moines River Claims Another Victim Tuesday Evening.Clarence Schnoor Meets an Untimely End While Bathing in the River at the Bridge North of Town.A promising young life was cut short Tuesday evening when Clarence Schnoor went to bathe and did not return alive. He was a young man about twenty years of age, a half brother of Herman Hauberg, who with Mr. Hauberg was in the employ of the Chrisehilies Herbsfc firm as a clerk. He and some other young men went to the river Tuesday evening to bathe, and chose a Bpot near the further bridge on the road leading north from town. It seems that young Schnoor could swim but little, if at all, and that there is a hole about fifteen feet deep at the place with very precipitous sides, and into this hole the unfortunate young man walked. He went down at once, and those who were present knew that he was drowning but there was no strong swimmer among them to go to his rescue. They rushed around . and got a log, and as Schnoor came up the second or third time they pushed the log to him but he made no effort to grasp it, and went down to rise no more.In a few minutes there was a crowd from town on the banks and many of them plunged into the water in the hope of finding the body before the last spark of life had fled, but their best efforts were unavailing. The water was deep and murky. But finally by the use of a hayrake the body was recovered and was taken to Mr. Herbst’s residence to await friends and interment. .The home of the young man was at Mt. Auburn, Iowa, and the sad news was immediately telegraphed there. Mr. Hauberg, the brother of the deceased, was absent at the time on his vacation. The Wednesday morning train brought the young man’s parents and one sister to Algona. They were met by Mr. Herbst and taken to his residence where the remains were. Short prayer services were held in the afternoon, conducted by Rev. Jackson, the Episcopal minister of Emmetsburg, and at 6:13 the body was taken to Mt. Auburn for burial. There are thirteen children in the family.
