Rome rejoiced at Pius IX’s pardon edict and liberation of prisoners as crowds lit streets with torches. The pope appeared on the Quirinal loggia blessing a grateful city, while banners and Verdi’s hymn echoed through the Piazza and Corto amid renewed hope for Italy’s future.
The crowd gathered around the Castle of St Angelo as liberated captives walked free through Rome. Tears and joy filled the streets as families reunited, prisoners returned to familiar places, and strangers shared in the overwhelming relief of emancipation.
Crowds gathered in Rome to greet the Pope as he departed the Mission church and rode to the Quirinal. Acclamations and flowers marked the cortege with women draped in satin and banners while a bold crowd dragged the carriage before the logs of the piazza Colonna, later blessing the crowd from the Loggia. Pale prisoners, freed by the Pontiff from debtors prison, waited outside the palace in tears.
