A first person traveler recalls years ago with a large Newfoundland dog named Lion, calm Flo, and Vere the monkey, as they journeyed across rough woods and lonely roads. The dog warned off thieves, stood guard at night, and kept the narrator safe while trading, camping, and facing risks of robbery.
A traveler shelters in a remote cabin with a hostile host and a dangerous woman. Lion the dog senses danger as the man devises a night escape using a carved pumpkin as a disguise to mislead the intruders. A violent struggle ensues when the intruders break in. Lion seizes the assailant by the throat while the narrator flees with aid from the wolfhound. They escape, capture the assailants, and the authorities later arrest them, with Lions valor celebrated as the decisive factor in the escape.
