The New York Giants defeated the Yankees 6-1 at Polo Grounds in a rain soaked opener before 45,000. Carl Hubbell allowed seven hits in a 17th straight win, despite a stormy game description ending with play by play notes and a continued page reference.
Wisconsin Socialists adopt a platform calling for collective ownership of production and distribution to replace the profit system. The document criticizes Republicans and Democrats for failing capitalism and notes current political alignment with the Farmer Labor Progressive federation while naming party officers and district delegates.
Yankees scoreless after first, Giants rally with nine runs through third. Selkirk Bartell Mancuso Whitehead Jackson drive in runs while Raffing and Hubbell trade blows. 45,000 attend as Raffing yields four walks and Hubbell eight strikeouts in a 6 to 1 win.
Emperor Haile Selassie signals willingness to cede part of Ethiopia under league covenant to settle the Italo-Ethiopian war. Ethiopian delegate Taezaz says concessions could create a national home or mandating power. Selassie emphasizes continued sovereignty and push for league mediated negotiations with Italy.
Col Frank Knox Republican vice presidential nominee declares Ohio a real fighting ground as his train arrives in Cincinnati for an evening address. The visit marks his first Ohio trip since nomination and follows a Grand Rapids Republican convention speech. Brown guides Knox campaign travel. Knox says he expects a Republican victory statewide, noting Wayne County as the only uncertain area.
Republican national chairman John Hamilton said Landon would win every state east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio He claimed Wisconsin was no longer doubtful and predicted Roosevelt would lose New York in the election district county and state
Democratic delegates adopt a 24 page platform full of Roosevelt support and opposition to the Progressive record. Republicans rally behind an American program backing Landon and discrediting Roosevelt with emphasis on taxation reform and farmer protection. A minority for a production for use plank within the Progressive party is defeated as Chairman La Follette presides.
Four people including pilot Oscar Hanold and photographer Wilma Schuester were killed when their plane crashed while filming a moving streamline train. A lone survivor, assistant photographer John Sedivy, was left behind due to lack of space for equipment.
C. F. Smith of Wausau named ten district directors for the Wisconsin London Knox clubs. Appointees include J Arthur Moran Delaware first district Fred C Evans Madison second J Henry Bennett Wisconsin third George Wegh Milwaukee fourth and fifth Gust Buchen Sheboygan sixth Caspar Wallhers Shawano seventh Elmer Honkamp Appleton eighth W T Doar New Richmond ninth and A Heden Ogema tenth.
Wisconsin voters cast for presidential electors with three parties naming their tickets. Republican electors include John B. Chapple and Edward J Lamp as at large, with district choices across Beloit Madison Milwaukee and other towns. Democratic selections list William B Rubin and Dr ML Richdarf with district names, and Socialist electors are headed by Al Jensen and Glenn Turner with numerous districts.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Col. Frank Knox will address crowds in Pittsburgh with events at Forbes Field and Duquesne Garden, following Roosevelt’s Mountain State Forest Festival trip from Elkins. Former Gov. A. P. Smith will speak by radio from New York.
Madrid evacuated its children as insurgent armies advanced toward the capital. Orphans and militiamen’s families were sent to Valencia and other refuges while the government opened routes and coast cities for those fleeing the looming clash. Franco reinforced near Ilescas and Villa Leung north of Toledo as mobilization expanded to counter the fascist drive.
Karl Browder communist candidate for president was arrested in Terre Haute Indiana as he and two New York associates stepped from a Chicago train. He, Waldo Frank novelist and Seymour Waldman election committee man face vagrancy charges while police prevent Browder from speaking tonight. Browder protested and said he would speak if permitted.
The first Chicago city series game between the Cubs and White Sox at Wrigley Field was halted and postponed due to rain. Weather disrupted the scheduled matchup, leaving both teams awaiting a rescheduled date.
President Roosevelt speeds south for a reelection push in his home state after denouncing communism and criticizing Republican leadership over social security and taxation at a Syracuse Democratic state convention. He plans White House meetings on boundary, new maritime commission, and a Southeast power pool to lower electricity costs in TVA territory.
Gov Alf Landon released a study saying New Deal old age insurance taxes would fall largely on the العامة of the nation. He urged a pay-as-you-go pension system funded via broad direct taxes and warned against financing solely with payroll and wage taxes.
