A 75-year-old Omro man, Hollis Laker, died after a Waushara County auto crash. He suffered chest injuries and died at Mercy Medical Center after surgery. Laker, born Oct 16 1897, was survived by his widow, six children, a sister, 18 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Funeral services are planned Saturday at Plansky Funeral Home.
Delegates to the American Corrections Association convention in Seattle were unable to view a video presentation when projectionists found a note at the auditorium stating the slides were stolen. The incident blocked the program at the Seattle Center Auditorium.
Washington based Cost of Living Council director John T Dunlop said retail beef prices should fall in coming weeks after wholesale cattle prices dropped up to a third in six weeks. Gasoline prices are expected to rise, while the postal rate hike faces uncertain action. Dunlop noted potential effects on consumers and publishers from higher mail rates though hearings were not confirmed.
President Nixon asked Congress to overhaul the patent system arguing it has not kept pace with technology. The Patent Modernization and Reform Act of 1973 aims to strengthen patent validity, speed disclosure, simplify procedures, and extend protection from 17 to 20 years while allowing corporate and institutional inventors to own patents and publish applications for public comment.

The Soviet Union launched Soyuz 12 with two cosmonauts Vasily Lazarev and Oleg Makarov into Earth orbit for a planned two day mission. Tass described the craft and systems as functioning normally and said the flight aimed to test a revamped Soyuz in preparation for a 1975 joint mission. The event marked the first manned Soviet flight since June 1971.
