Miners trapped two miles underground after an explosion at Gresford colliery. Despite daylong efforts rescuers could not reach the lost men amid flames and poison gas. Sixteen bodies recovered. nearly 300 of 400 miners survived. Penetration into Dennis main deep proved impossible as rescue teams faced deadly heat and gas.
President Roosevelt said the federal relief plan for next winter is not yet formed. He met with Mayor LaGuardia and Hopkins to discuss broader strategy and indicated a new program may be outlined in early January. He supported McCarl’s ban on using 15 million relief funds for a forest shelter belt. The tree planting plan remains tentative as administration moves forward.
Fred Ernsting, 42, was fined 30 dollars in district court for branding his 11 year old son Wayne with a red hot soldering iron to stop theft. The boy suffered long lasting scars on his thighs and cried as the judge condemned the act as abhorrent. Col umbus dispatch reports Charles Makley was fatally shot by prison guards during a failed escape attempt at the Ohio penitentiary. Harry Pierpont was seriously wounded. both men faced death-penalty appeals tied to the October slaying of Sheriff Jess Sarber. Guards described the weapons as soap-imitations of a pistol and automatic, used in a bid to bluff their way past guards.
