Truck Hit by Train Ends With Minor Injuries
Lawrence Weyer of Appleton, driver of a dump truck, escaped serious harm after being struck by a Soo Line switch engine at a levee crossing near Harrison Street and Nevada Avenue. The truck rolled 45 feet, trapped Weyer for over two minutes, as gasoline seeped from the inverted cab. Bystander Jim Whalen of Oshkosh rescued him. Whalen sustained a three inch forearm cut. Weyer was treated at Mercy Hospital and released. the engine crew, including engineer Charles Allen, reported the crossing was clear before impact.
