Reports from Buffalo say the President has passed the danger point after the assassination attempt. Physicians including Dr. Charles McBursey say recovery is assured unless a rare complication arises. A day of national thanksgiving is planned as the public rejoices at continuing improvement.
AP reports another crisis night at Buffalo Milburn House with President McKinley showing stable signs. Morning bulletin notes slight fever rise but overall improved comfort. guards and observers kept watch as rain falls and shelter tents provide relief from the vigil.
Milburn House Buffalo September 10 doctors announce the president slept well and was cheerful though not nourished by feeding. Dr Roswell Park says recovery possible unless unexpected complications arise and removal to Washington may be considered later. Bulletin notes conservative medical stance and equal treatment under private citizenship while medical science guides the case.
Milburn House Buffalo Sept 10 Dr McBurney reports the president is practically out of danger with marked improvement and hopes of recovery. He cautions that blood poisoning and peritonitis are still possibilities but the danger from inflammation has passed and a bullet extraction will be considered if needed. The surgeon remains supremely confident and plans a visit to Niagara Falls.
Milwaukee September reports a split within Bay View Amalgamated association after a meeting on returning to work. Radical members claim representation of the Milwaukee unit and accuse conservatives of expulsion. If conservatives are expelled, a local lodge may form. Manguaress jumps eleven feet in height in a deer reach contest.
Emma Goldman, labeled the high priestess of anarchy, was arrested in Chicago after denying knowledge of Leon Czolgosz and the president's assassin. She admitted meeting him on July 12 and said she was an anarchist and sociology student. police questioned her about conspiracy to murder the president, with several co‑suspects already detained.
The bulletins from Milburn House Buffalo and Budala N Y report the president had a comfortable night after an attempt on his life. Temperatures ranged around 100.4 to 100 and 20.8 with respirations near 25 to 26 per minute. No complications noted and rapid convalescence expected if conditions remain favorable.
Emma Goldman, the anarchist leader, reportedly held sight conferences with St Louis anarchists in a saloon at 201 South Third Street. She arrived from Cincinnati and may have moved toward Chicago after another meeting at Tony Faust's. A letter from New York with a check was received. Detroit dispatch reports neighbors and a Polish saloonkeeper link Leon Czolgosz to a 1874 birth in the Benton Street home. Records place the family at 141 Benton Street in 1874 before moving to Posen and Alpena. The age estimate runs from 23 to 27, depending on birthplace.
Dr. Krause former governor of Johannesburg was again brought before Bow Street police court on treason charges and told a warrant for incitement to murder was issued in the Transvaal. His lawyer questioned why a non English subject faces High Treason. The case adjourned awaiting papers from the Transvaal.
A two story brick building housing the Oregon Short Line general offices was gutted by a fire in Salt Lake City. An explosion blew out much of the south wall and front of the building, injuring four firefighters including Assistant Chief McCarthy. The blast destroyed plans for a Salt Lake Extension and caused an estimated loss near 256000.
In McKeesport National Tube Works and Demmler works strikers hold fast as operations stall. Executives of Amalgamated association adjourn with no agreement and plan possible New York trip for Shaffer and Williams to press for peace. Officials remain tight lipped while workers resist return.
Six year old Anne Kramer of 199 Scott Street vanished after a man offered to buy her shoes. A neighbor sighted a tall dressed man leading a blonde braided girl toward Main Street. Police intercepted a suspect, Karl Stolnen, who claimed the child accompanied him voluntarily after she accepted treats. The girl was found distressed but safe with him by Fourth Street near the Wisconsin Central line.
Madison Wisconsin September 10 the salt issue challenging the law creating Gates county from northern Chippewa county will be argued by the supreme court around October 22 the court advanced the case to the third assignment and adjourned to September 24 for further proceedings
A New York Herald special reports U S police near a drag net to detain anarchists blamed for a plot to murder President McKinley and other officials. Emma Goldman is cited as a possible leader, with Buffalo linked to portions of the conspiracy and a questioned associate providing key information.
Chief Wilkie of the secret service received unofficial word that Antonio Maggio a cornet player with an opera company has been arrested in New Mexico. He allegedly boasted that the president would be shot before October 1 and that he regretted not doing the shooting himself. A secret service operative was sent to locate and arrest him.
London dispatch from Lord Kitchener dated Pretoria reports since Sept 2 Boer columns have 681 total casualties with 67 killed and 67 wounded, 734 prisoners and 16 surrenders. The report notes 73 rifles, 65,211 rounds, 3,400 horses, and 13,000 head of cattle captured. Cape Colony situation unchanged except for Lotier's command capture reported last week.
In Buffalo, Mrs Czstgoxz, mother of the man who tried to assassinate President McKinley, was in the city but did not seek to see him. The prisoner asked for a lawyer immediately, declaring that when funds and counsel are provided, his defense will proceed.
Calumet Mich Sept 10 The Isle Stoyale copper mine strike ended with the 500 workers returning to duty this week after demands for shorter hours and higher wages were granted. Four hundred other workers at Massachusetts Consolidated mine also secured their wage and hour improvements and went back to work.
In Cleveland on September 16 the Grand Army encampment opened with nearly 200000 visitors. The eighty seventh anniversary of Commodore Perry’s Lake Erie victory was celebrated with a naval parade in which veterans joined. General Leo Rassieur reviewed the march as rain fell lightly and clouds loomed. Vice President Roosevelt could not attend, and Senator Hanna will oversee the president’s day arrangements in Cleveland with a committee meeting planned.
Remains from Long Island Nebraska arrived with daughter Emma Merton. Services at Bertha Grube’s home conducted by Rev E H Smith of the First Congregational church. Daughters, grandson, and pallbearers noted. Interment at Riverside Cemetery. Also funeral for Dora Luhm to be held at 189 Fifteenth Street with Rev Smith officiating.
Syracuse dispatch reports Mr. Geers accepted a $00 purse for Cresceus to race The Abbot, with the winner taking the entire prize. The meet was wired to Meadville track managers on September 10.
