General Dwight D. Eisenhower labels the Democratic administration a mess of corruption and scandal and calls for a wholesale clean-out of political bosses in Washington. He delivered the speech as he began a southern campaign swing in Atlanta, aiming to sharpen the GOP’s message against the Truman regime.
S J Wittman won the Continental Trophy race at Wayne Major Airport near Detroit with a 197.29 mph average over 3744 miles, finishing just ahead of John Creep Paul Jones. Jones was disqualified after the race leaving Wittman and fellow Oshkosh pilots Brennand and Porter on the list. prize money totaled $4,200 for Wittman plus $1,500 earlier, with Brennand at $1,100 and Porter at $900. The weekend air show also saw three fatal crashes including Harry Withars, Maj Donald Adams, and Capt Edward Kelly.
In a hard hitting speech pivoting on corruption, Ike decried a “washington mess” and urged a top to bottom clean-out to restore decency and integrity. Fair and cool to night and Wednesday with warmer conditions inland. Wisconsin highs near 70 to 75, lows 40 to 46. Minnesota expects similar fair, mostly fair on Wednesday, with lows around 40 to 45 and highs near 75. Observations note river gauges and dam crest changes.
William M. Gardner 25 signed a statement admitting he caused the death of Agnes Jaeger 24 whose brutally beaten body was found in a field on Aug 16. He said he will prove at trial he is not guilty of first degree murder and claimed the lug wrench was the weapon though he did not intend to kill her. Gardner has been jailed on $50,000 bond since Aug 18.

Flames spread over about 10 000 acres of bone dry timber and grasslands in Northern and Central California. State Forestry Division reported favorable odds that most fires would be controlled by midweek, aided by luck and ongoing suppression efforts.
Storm at Carswell Air Force Base wrecked a B-36 bomber and damaged six others. Capt. Burton Wilder said several buildings suffered severe damage and ten civilians were hurt. Maj. Gen. Samuel E. Anderson estimated 25 percent aircraft damage. A civilian, Mrs. W. C. Connor, was killed by a sign blown down in the storm. Two airmen were slightly injured. The Consolidated Vultee Aircraft plant nearby also suffered power disruption and dock damage.
In Seoul Allied troops repulsed three Chinese attacks on the Western Front near Old Baldy and Bunker-Siberia Hill as clouds hindered air raids. U N prisoners of war protests and a hanging death among Reds were reported from Munsan, with Nam Hi accusing U S forces of killings. Armistice talks remain deadlocked over POW exchanges as negotiations resume Thursday.
President Truman denounces John Foster Dulles and the Eisenhower campaign for “cruel gutter politics” that could raise the risk of atomic conflict behind the Iron Curtain. He warns that upgrading rhetoric will not topple the Kremlin and stresses the limits of campaign blasts.
European police search for Capt. Julian Rodriguez Pastrana, head of Gen. Francisco Franco's War ministry, reported missing with at least four million pesetas. Army officials say he failed to return August 27 from a five day leave. Investigators found a passport and travel documents prepared for an extended trip, destination unknown.
In Pittsburgh the ten day Memorial Period ended at midnight, allowing United Mine Workers to resume coal production after a stoppage that kept 475,000 miners out since August 23. Producers expect full operations by late afternoon and shifts to begin between six and seven. The period reduced the national coal stock by about 10 million tons.
Governor Adlai Stevenson faced weak crowds and polite reception across Michigan on Labor Day as he campaigned in Detroit Grand Rapids Flint Pontiac and Cadillac Square. In Houston a squad was sent to investigate a reported dead man in a truck. The man stirred and frowned, and the driver insisted the man had been driving all night, saying he was not dead. The incident prompted further verification by authorities.
