Crowds surged into Winnebago county fair despite morning gloom with 14 000 on site by 1 30 pm and 90 percent arriving after 9 am. Officials expect total attendance to exceed last year’s 22 600 if no rain reduces evening turnout.

United States officials in Madrid ordered all Americans to leave as Washington moves to withdraw warships from Spanish waters. Ruth Muir a 48 year old welfare worker was found murdered on La Jolla Beach front. A stained concrete fragment from the scene is being tested for the murder weapon. Detectives questioned more than twenty men amid concern the killer may be from outside La Jolla or San Diego.
Milwaukee. A total of 10170 in bail money was posted today for 245 men arrested by police and sheriff officers in raids on six gambling establishments five here and one in Cudahy Six of the prisoners were booked as keepers of gambling houses and freed on 500 bail apiece. Bail of 30 each was provided for 239 inmates. Uniformed squads of 10 men descended on all places at once after 4 pm. Sledge hammers pickaxes and screwbars battered heavy doors. Six patrol wagons from outlying precincts aided in taking prisoners to headquarters. The raids followed a conference between Dist Atty William A Zabel and Chief Joseph T Kluchesky who took office four days ago. Zabel said the raids had been planned for 10 days but the drive was delayed by the death of Chief Jacob G Lau-
