Pasadena AP reports Surveyor 1 adjusted its course 97,000 miles from Earth for a safer landing in the Sea of Storms. Jet Propulsion Laboratory officials say the 2,200 pound craft responds to commands and should touch down about 20 miles north of the previous target, with hours of tracking ahead.
Recife authorities report at least 92 people feared drowned after floods from heavy rains deluged the Atlantic coast area since last Friday. More than 6.5 inches of rain fell in some spots and at least 1000 residents were forced from their homes by floods.
The state paused in Milwaukee and Menomonee Falls to remember fallen service members and protest Viet Nam war policy. About 30,100 people filled downtown Milwaukee for a one minute parade of bands and veterans groups while protesters distributed handbills. Jailed for vagrancy, two protesters claimed the arrests infringed free speech. Politicians urged nuclear ban and peace talks, noting Soviet coexistance progress. Memorial Center hosted Gold Star Mothers as a lone spectator fired a pistol skyward.
Madison reports lawmakers planned to adjourn the session but major items such as water pollution programs and highway acceleration remained unresolved. Gov Knowles pushed a 200 million subsidy loan to tackle pollution after Senate approval, while the Assembly had yet to take it up.
Wisconsin reported eight traffic deaths over the Memorial Day weekend, the lowest in years, with a single fatality on Monday. One multi-vehicle crash occurred while other deaths resulted from cars hitting trees, a bridge, a guard rail, a creek embankment, and a utility pole. A priest, Rev Phillip Hamntschel, 28, Green Bay, died when his car hit a pole near Sobieski Corners. Barbara Lemonrond, 26, Black Creek, also perished in a separate crash.
UPI reports in Austin that the Constitution party nominated its candidate on Monday for the office now held by Democrat Jesse James. The nominee is Jesse Lee James.
The three day Memorial Day period saw rising fatalities with 42 lives lost as of midnight Monday. Drowning toll reached ten in South Carolina while California logged the most overall deaths. Somerset Kentucky saw the worst single crash. The Associated Press notes 376 deaths nationally from Friday to Monday and 10,710 in the first quarter of 1966.
Washington AP says a Navy serviceman in a top secret area secretly collected highly sensitive information and tried to sell it to the Soviets. The Navy tightened security worldwide and cautioned commanders that authorized personnel failed to challenge his need to know. The case prompted Navy officials to flag weaknesses in security and to note no details were released about the material or whether it was acquired.
Gemini 9 astronauts Lt. Col. Thomas Stafford and Lt. Cmdr. Eugene Cernan prepare for a three day space endurance test aboard a Titan rocket. They will target an Augmented Target Docking Adapter and aim for a 1. mile high circular orbit with a final countdown set after a five hour systems check.
In Kampala Uganda authorities said a nationwide hunt was launched for six prominent Buganda politicians described as wanted urgently. Police did not disclose charges but the case is linked to an independence movement crushed by forces loyal to President Milton Qobole last week.
A minor tremor about four on the Richter scale shook Virginia from Washington to Richmond, with Charlottesville and Williamsburg feeling the tremor. No major damage or injuries were reported as residents called police and stations about furniture moving and houses shaking.
In Saigon negotiations began as Budd hist leaders met Premier Nguyen Cao Ky and Chief of State Nguyen Van Thieu following a fifth self immolation in Hue. Thich Tam Chau headed a four member delegation to Gia Long Palace seeking a civilian regime. no statement was issued.
