The Associated Press reports a Memorial Day weekend traffic toll reaching a record total of 675 deaths from May 12 to May 16, with 457 fatal crashes, 62 drownings, 116 miscellaneous deaths, and 40 drowning mishaps. Previous high was 413 in 1957, officials noting heavy toll and urging caution.
Wisconsin highway crashes over a four day Memorial Day weekend left 14 people dead, raising the state toll to 309 for 1961. Francis M. Nelson, 46, of Hortonville, died at St Elizabeth's Hospital after a Monday collision with a dairy truck on Highway 10 near Appleton.
