Toll of Memorial Day Weekend Fatalities Tops 185
United Press International reports the National Safety Council fears a new all time high for road deaths during a three day Memorial Day weekend. By 9:00 a.m. the toll stood at 185 with 121 road fatalities, 34 drownings, five plane crash deaths, and 25 in other accidents. New York led with 11 road deaths. Pat O Connor died in a 16 car crash at Indianapolis Speedway.

Algerian Air Crash Kills 14 Including 10 French Soldiers
PARIS AP A commercial Air France flight with 14 on board including 10 French soldiers crashed about six miles southwest of Molieres, six miles southwest of Molieres. The plane was en route from Algiers to Tindouf and went down about an hour after takeoff. Cause not yet known.

Four Killed On Highways In Wisconsin
The Memorial Day weekend toll in Wisconsin rose with four highway deaths as of Friday. Lawrence Cohen, 23, of Fond du Lac, and his wife were injured when their motorcycle crashed near West Bend. Ester Westover, 36, of Manitowoc, died when her car struck a tree in city limits. Leona Brei, 56, of Kimberly, died after being thrown from a vehicle on Highway 29 near Shawano. Alvin Brei was injured. Gilbert Helke, 46, of Rudolph, died en route to a hospital after a tire blew on Highway 26 near Juneau. Robert Drinkman, 20, of Glenwood City, drowned in a Dunn County gravel pit. his brother Fred, 16, tried to help.

Storms broke the Memorial Day tranquility with thunderstorms hail and a possible tornado. The Weather Bureau reported a likely tornado near Selz North Dakota destroying two farms and damaging another while earlier a tornado hit near Duluth. Nebraska Crawford saw lines down and 7 to 11 inch hail. Rain and showers spread across the Great Lakes and Rocky Mountain regions as warm moist air moved from the Gulf toward the Atlantic and west.

Thomas R. Daniels, 61, publisher of the Middleton Times-Tribune since 1924, died Friday of a heart attack after completing the Memorial Day parade march. A 1923 University of Wisconsin alumnus, he was a standout miler on the track team. Survived by widow Eileen and son Robert of Brooklyn.

In Long Beach California AP reports pilot A G Hermerdinger 48 hails the maiden flight of the four engine DC8 jetliner carrying 176 across the United States in 41 hours. The test flight lasted 2 hours 5 minutes from Municipal Airport over the ocean to Edwards Air Force Base. The DC8 tops 400 mph and has 3900 mile range with wingspan 139 ft 9 in length 1530 ft 42 ft tail height.

Loss 500000 As Boats Burn In Sandusky Fire
Fire of undetermined origin swept 14 boat houses on the east shore of Sandusky Bay Friday night causing an estimated 500000 in damage. Two 65000 cruisers were destroyed. The Sandusky fire department used all available equipment in a two hour battle to subdue the blaze. Boat houses were two stories high with docking facilities at water level and private living quarters above.

Bold Thief Sought After Milwaukee Garage Breakin
Milwaukee police seek a burglar who entered the Municipal Garage through an unlocked window Friday night. He ransacked Health Department, Bureau of Municipal Equipment, Forestry Department and City Safety Commission offices, then escaped via a stolen 1997 city station wagon crashing through garage doors. An employee saw the car strike a curb and called police.
