The four day Memorial day weekend claimed at least 377 lives nation wide with highway crashes over 205 deaths and 85 drownings. Wisconsin and upper Michigan reported 22 fatalities from traffic and drowning, plus multiple exotic accidents and local losses across states including New York and California.
An explosion shattered a temporary five story frame school in Berberton Akron area injuring 30 to 40 children and a teacher and janitor. Students with facial bleeding and bruises were taken to Barberton Citizens hospital and Barberton clinic. Neighbors called it terrific with debris and a blackboard driven across a street as gas or heat may have ignited. Rescuers freed those trapped as ambulances crowded the scene.
Chinese military dispatches report about 860 Japanese soldiers killed as forces recapture Hyinchi five miles north of Chungsiang. Japanese units attacked in large numbers along the Hankow Ichang highway under heavy artillery cover.
Congressional leaders told President Roosevelt they expect to finish major legislation by July 15, including neutrality, taxes, relief, local security, and labor relations amendments. If adjournment occurs, Roosevelt would delay his mid June West Coast trip, with more details next week.
Retired Maj. Gen. George Van Horn Moseley testified before the House committee that he repeatedly warned Gen. Malin Craig about a plan to overthrow the government. Park Falls Superior Green Bay and La Crosse posted 92 to 94. Milwaukee set a new high for Memorial Day at 94.
Weather report notes scattered thundershowers possible Thursday afternoon followed by warm conditions. Northwestern observations show partly cloudy conditions with highs near 104 in Milwaukee and benchmarks from cities like Busmarck Phoenix and Roseburg with a 42 reading in Yellowstone area.
Stephen Paine former partner of Paine Webber and Co is charged by a federal grand jury with 17 counts of mail fraud and one conspiracy count. The indictment cites loans to Boston attorneys to finance control stock in Insuranshares and Burco with repayments drawn from portfolios. Paine Webber is not named as a defendant.

Anthony Papas a 53 year old special policeman shot and wounded Muriel Campbell 12 during a dispute over a 15 cent melon at a fruit market in Chicago. The incident followed a prank by students in which a watermelon was tossed. Campbell was wounded and Papas was arrested. charges had earlier been dismissed in a separate incident with Herbert Winkelhake.
William F. Ashe of Kaukauna is named by Governor Hei to head a new state research division created to investigate irregularities and operating costs of agencies. He will earn 5000 annually with a 15000 dollar interim appropriation and may be removed at any time.
Berlin reports Germany and Denmark signed a nonaggression pact promising mutual restraint. The move follows President Roosevelt’s peace appeal and precedes broader talks with Scandinavian nations.
Edouard Herriot former French premier sustained head injuries in a car accident near Montargis. He was transported to Paris where officials said his injuries were not serious. The incident followed a weekend disturbance in the north woods involving Senator Jolie PL and others.
In a dramatic supreme soviet speech Molotov dismissed the British French peace front as insufficient saying Russia will defend its frontiers and Outer Mongolia. He warned of patience limits and signaled possible resumption of trade talks with Germany. لندن
Former Oregon Governor Charles Moran accused the National Labor Board and the Creton lumber rivalry of backing thugs and inflaming violence in Oregon labor disputes. He cited six men sent to “DTS” for violence, and said the board took sides with the rival C L OL organization, urging action against the board.
