An Oshkosh community service lasting six minutes paid respects to the war dead at Riverside Park. The AmVets auxiliary and local citizens, led by Mrs. Florence Stripe, observed at 8 a.m. with flag recalls from the color guard, a Naval Reserve firing squad fired three volleys, and taps sounded.

More than 100000 visitors were expected to file past the eternal flame at President John F. Kennedy’s grave in Arlington National Cemetery as Mrs Kennedy and children knelt in brief ceremonies on his birthday. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and family observed prayers nearby before the Kennedys flew to Hyannisport for a televised birthday tribute.

Wausau AP Terry Caspersen, 21, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to first degree murder in the death of Eleanor Kaatz, 18. Traffic Deaths Climb Steadily During Memorial Holiday
Traffic fatalities rose as millions drove during the second day of the 78 hour Memorial Day weekend. Early today 122 deaths noted since 6 p.m. Thursday with a projected 410 to 490 deaths by Sunday midnight. More than 83 million autos expected on the road.
