Washington AP. Unemployment among workers insured for jobless benefits fell for the fifth straight week. A government report shows a decline of 82,000 in the week of May 17, leaving 3,019,500 insured unemployed. Department store sales rose 3 percent last week from 1957, with gains in nine of twelve Fed districts, though year to date sales remain 3 percent below last year. Over 900,000 workers exhausted benefit rights and are not counted among insured unemployed, though some have found new jobs. Michigan led with 12,800 declines, followed by Pennsylvania with 7,500.

HONOLULU AP The submarine Stickelback sank off Oahu after a collision with the destroyer escort Silverstein during antisubmarine exercises.
