Holiday observances marked Memorial Day as communities paused for tribute to fallen service members. A United Press tally counted 403 deaths across accidents, drownings, and other incidents, with Ohio leading states at 21 fatalities and California 20.
The Associated Press reports nine deaths in Wisconsin road and train accidents since Friday Memorial Day weekend. Incidents include a crash near New Lisbon injuring three sisters and a driver, a collision near Marshfield with minor injuries, a train striking a car near Black River Falls killing Heman Mathews, and a fishing boat accident near Turtle Lake with four aboard.
Defense Minister Sohn Worn Vn of the Republic of Korea left Seoul with one aide for Tokyo and Washington to press for more American military aid in 1955 and 1956. He is to confer with U S officials in Tokyo for two days before continuing to Washington.
Four American airmen to be released by Red China amid ongoing tensions. The chaotic period also features a prolonged railway strike paralyzing Britain with 79 009 workers walking out, halting essential rail service and challenging public operations.

Cynthiana Kentucky reports Eliza Ann Rogers remembered her 16th birthday as the first memorial. Now 2nd birthday today she recalls a life of farming, garden work, and chickens. She has 9 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Married James Rogers on February 18 on a farm near Salem district. He died in 1817 and she kept house for years until retirement. Now her sole activity is church and Sunday services.
Belgrade reports a cool Yugoslav reception to Soviet overtures but notes Moscow aims for long term goals. Khrushchev and Kosygin statements suggest a path toward peaceful coexistence, while Tito maintains independence from Moscow. Yugoslavia gains symbolic apologies for past denouncements and hints of renewed dialogue.
