Fire and death in New York and Jersey City factory blaze
Fire at Herman Bros furniture factory on Mongin and Tompkins streets New York destroyed a five story building saturated with oil. The blaze forced hundreds of tenants from surrounding tenements into the streets as firefighters battled the flames. Loss estimated at 1.5 million to 2 million with 500 workers left jobless. In Jersey City a three story tenement at Colgate Street collapsed killing four and injuring several others while a nearby fire crew cleared debris. no fire followed the collapse.
