GOP in House Move for Cut In Foreign Aid
A group of House Republicans calling themselves a minority move to trim up to 100 million dollars from President Johnsons 3.37 billion foreign aid authorization bill. Rep Sk Ross Adair of Indiana expects to offer one or two amendments to let lawmakers oppose foreign aid spending. The plan faces slim chances as Democrats hold a strong majority and Johnson uses a barebones aid request. Adair needs support from four other Foreign Affairs Committee Republicans. four dissenters are H R Gross, E Y Berry, Edward J Derwinski, and Vernon W Thomson. The House completed a four hour debate on the bill and will vote on amendments tonight. Rep Thomas E Morgan says foreign aid is not a miracle vaccine but has helped counter communism and is vital to U S security. The authorization sets the spending ceiling. actual money will be decided in an appropriations bill.
