Armed Alaska Fishermen Ready to Confront Japanese Boats

Angry Alaskan fishermen prepared to arm today to defend Bristol Bay in the Bering Sea. The Pacific Coast Codfish Company will dispatch 24 rifles and ammunition to two ships, Sophie Christensen and Charles R Wilson, amid tense waterfront reports of 15 Japanese boats nearby. Fishermen say they will act if necessary to drive Japanese vessels from Alaskan waters beyond the three mile limit.

Hyde warns of deeper depression under Roosevelt at Emporia rally

Arthur M. Hyde, secretary of agriculture under Hoover, told a Republican rally in Emporia Kansas that the United States faces another, possibly more devastating depression under the Roosevelt administration. Oshkosh Man Elected Society Head at Green Bay Meeting

Dr A G Koehler of Oshkosh elected president of the Sixth Councilor Medical Society with Oshkosh chosen for the 1939 meeting. Dr Ben Williams of Oshkosh named secretary and Dr C W Leonard of Fond du Lac named vice president. About 150 doctors attended Green Bay session. British freighter Thorpehall sunk by Spanish rebels near Valencia

The 1,251-ton Thorpehall was sunk by insurgent air raiders off Valencia as Seaplanes from Mallorca bombed the anchored freighter two bombs hit. One officer and one seaman wounded, crew saved. Owned by Westcliff Shipping of London, previously interned at Amsterdam in 1937 for alleged insurgent money and jewel trafficking.

Menasha Wins Permit to Screen Raw River Water

The Public Service Commission granted Menasha permission to install equipment at its water plant to screen raw river water from the intake. The improvement will cost about $15,000. A hearing on Kaukauna’s electric plant project for Fox River water power rights is set for May 27 in Madison.

Airliner Crashes At Cleveland Ten Occupants Killed

United Air Lines sleeper plane crashed near Cleveland airport while making a left turn toward a field. Ten people aboard including two pilots and a stewardess died. bodies were removed after rains cooled the scene. Pilot and control tower witnesses indicated engines were off at impact and the fire followed the crash.

A Great Western passenger train plunged into a ditch four miles west of Freeport, killing engineer Barney Gosnell 60 and fireman E G Zaleske 40. Two express cars day coach and a Pullman car derailed. remaining crew and 10 passengers escaped unharmed. Cause of wreck undetermined.

Keith Will Direct New State Bureau

George M. Keith named state pensions supervisor to lead a new state inspection and enforcement bureau. The five department chiefs approved the $4890 yearly post as part of a consolidation slated to take effect by July 1. The bureau will merge duties from the Public Service and Tax Commissions, Agriculture and Markets, and State Inspection Bureau, covering motor vehicle, beverage tax, oil and gas, weights and measures, licenses for pedlars, circuses, and carnivals.

Hopkins Denounced By Wheeler on Primary Interference

Washington senator Wheeler Democrat Montana denounced WPA head Hopkins on the senate floor for conduct in the Iowa senatorial primaries.
