Order Restored After Escape Attempt At State Penal Farm
Vandalia reports 600 prisoners rioted at the Vandalia state penal farm last night, prompting National Guardsmen to be rushed in. Four buildings were set on fire and guards were assaulted for two hours before police and guards returned to routine duties. Col. Frank Whipp said order was restored and no further trouble was seen inside the fences. Four escape attempt leaders were jailed, three wounded. Clifford Ikes was struck by a stray bullet but not involved in the prison break, according to Supt C A Metzger.
