After allowing for displacements from other industries and domestic service it is estimated about 90 thousand women have gone to work who did not before the war.
A German man Bruny Weina, speaking little English, was detained by Los Angeles police on May 24 after discovery of a notebook mentioning “Fort Curry” and a U S Ship 2 Lone Beach. He is held for federal investigators and offers no explanation for the notes.
Madison May 24 United Press reports Charles Hart of Oshkosh, hospitalized in Madison with pneumonia, is out of danger and expected to leave the hospital within two weeks. He is not anticipated to return to legislative work this season.
President Wilson will receive Maj. Gen. John J. Pershing at 5 o'clock this afternoon at the White House to receive instructions regarding his command of 23,000 Regulars who will fight in France.
