St Paul May 2 The test case to decide the validity of the preservative ban in foods was argued before the state supreme court. The state sued C F Wagenhaly and J M Rumbers in Minneapolis for using preservatives. Tome G Uroth argued borax is harmless and protects salt use, while Attorney General Douglas contended borax harms health and the act is not discriminatory.
Milwaukee, Wis. May 4 Special to The Northwestern Stephen C Powder Up Colling saloon keeper and Puato Palmer River Street resort keeper were denied a new trial in municipal court. Judge Brawe sentenced Colling to five years and Palmer to three and a half years in Gate Prison at Wanpun for the theft of money and jewelry from Charles L. Lave a whiskey salesman of Grand Rapids Mich.
An evening Wisconsin special reports a fumigation of a Marinette house nearly caused a major fire in Wausauker. Sulphur burned inside the residence and the blaze destroyed the building, with a loss of 31,60. Sparks from the structure set fire to the nearby Wenantkes hotel and endangered adjoining areas as a strong wind blew.
Reports from Wilkes-Barre and surrounding areas indicate President Mitchell plans unspecified action if soft coal shipments surge toward the anthracite region. He leaves for the West for four days as district leaders return home and strikes in St Louis and Denver unfold with negotiations in progress.

A St Paul report says northeastern Iowa was half submerged after a cloudburst. Sixteen bridges near Decorah were destroyed and ten miles of Milwaukee line washed out. Two lives were lost in Decorah, with extensive property damage and rail disruption across the region.
