Washington D C plans announced remove Lincoln Andrews as assistant secretary of the treasury on Aug 1 ending a two and a half year term guiding enforcement of Eighteenth Amendment laws. He will be replaced by Dr James M Doran a North Dakota native and former prohibition commissioner in a move to appoint two new driving figures in federal enforcement. Seymour Lowman will succeed Andrews as acting head with duties over customs coast guard and prohibition.
Washington Assistant Secretary of Treasury Andrews declined a $15,000 yearly offer to head the association against impure liquor. He said Charles Capehart, the association president, offered the job but he did not take it seriously. He plans no post retirement ties to prohibition groups.
George Mannel, 4th district federal prohibition agent and former Monroe county deputy sheriff and Sparta police chief, shot himself at his Sparta home Friday night after a week at St Mary’s hospital with Bricht’s disease attack. Known for vigorous law enforcement, he once shot and killed an escaping prisoner during his deputy tenure.
