Dr Lappont visited the pope this morning and found that the knee pain had nearly vanished and his general condition had improved. Although slightly above normal, the pope’s temperature allowed him to sit up for a few hours but not resume audiences until week’s end, pending further progress.
The Associated Press reports Senator Ralph Burton of Kansas defies calls to resign after a Supreme Court decision upholding a six month jail term and $1,500 fine for accepting a $500 monthly fee from Rialto Grain and Securities Co. for services linked to government actions. The ruling notes the case hinges on a violation of federal law prohibiting compensation for services rendered before government departments.
Budapest May 1 The new Hungarian parliament opened its first sitting with Premier Wekerle loudly cheered entering the lower house. The dean of the deputies chaired and invited the house to meet at the Royal castle tomorrow when Emperor King Francis Joseph will formally open parliament and deliver the throne speech. The house elected officers and formed committees.
The Associated Press reports the Brooklyn Handicap at New York on May 11, with Tokalon declared the winner and Dan Hon finishing second ahead of Pickett in a closely contested race.

Engineer John Cole killed his daughter Maria with an axe and fatally injured his wife before shooting himself. The incident followed the daughter's departure with a young man she was engaged to. The daughter died instantly as she dodged her father's axe. The mother was struck unconscious as she fled, and Cole then killed himself with a revolver.
Tergaard, ex Ra c ine police officer and wealthy owner, was deemed insane by physicians and admitted to Northern hospital. He pursued peat speculation, bought real estate at high prices, and sought luxury cars to transport clients to peat beds. Past confinement at Wauwatose asylum noted.
Special to The Northwestern reports a painter living at 800 West Street Fond du Lac was run over by a car at the crossing of the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul lines. The incident occurred May 21 as the victim stood near the street.
Poland May 21 Count Keller, a colonel of dragoons, was wounded by a bomb thrown at him during a return from a review. His horse was killed and his comrade injured. The would be assassin, a young man, escaped. Keller was nephew of Lt General Count Keller who died in 1904 defending Yangtze defenses. The report notes similar parliamentary replies and averted storm over the emperor’s reception of a lower house delegation as parliament resumes business and agrarian discussion proceeds.
Cl QL Truesdell of Milwaukee secretary of the Wisconsin Funeral Directors and Embalmers association visited Oshkosh since Saturday to secure a rest and renew friendships. The Milwaukee convention is set for August 26 to 29 with exams August 31. Many will also attend the Chicago national convention in September. The first night hosts include the Commercial Travelers’ Association of Wisconsin at Wonderland. the next evening furniturers and caskets makers host. A grand banquet closes the event Thursday August 30 at White Shoal Bay. Oshkosh undertakers hope to host next year’s convention. Officials preserved pamphlet editions of the official proceedings for readers.
A fire swept through Eagle Wisconsin this morning destroying the mill and a nearby building. Local authorities report no injuries and investigation continues into the cause.
From St. Petersburg on May 1, reports say a military court investigating the surrender of Port Arthur has condemned to death Lieutenant General Stoessel who led the Russian forces at Port Arthur and Rear Admiral Nebogatoff who commanded a squadron during the sea battle, for the actions that led to the Japanese victory.
Federal agents arrested Stephen A D Puter at Alameda California after months on the run from Boston detectives. He used the alias James William Barr and planned to sail for China when seized. In Park Street lodging he kept an arsenal and a revolver, and resisted arrest by drawing a pistol.
In Gireult court this morning Anna M Schmidtyys and Michael E Schmidt faced a split case. Anna seeks legal separation over cruelty and inhuman treatment while Michael requests an absolute divorce amid similar charges. They married in this city on July 146 and have two children.
Special to The Northwestern reports a ten year old boy from Eau Claire disappeared yesterday and was found today in the river. Dam officials are investigating circumstances.
Vice Consul W. H. Stuart, 49, English by birth and acting consul, is shot and killed at his Batoum country home. The assassin fled, authorities expect Russian action. Batoum, a Black Sea port with 30,000 residents, hinges on oil shipping. Stuart had faced threats amid fall unrest and a 1,600 rouble extortion demand from dock laborers. No motive or suspect details released.
Congressman James H. Davidson predicts major measures will reach statute books by session end, including rail rates, pure food, naturalization, and immigration. He cites statehood bills for Oklahoma and Indian Territory as a state, and Arizona and New Mexico as one, with referendums.

Total losses not exceeding 200 thousand dollars. some papers claimed up to 2,000 homeless, while fires ranged across 400 square miles with widespread damage limited to small structures.

Grand jury met at the Fond du Lac courthouse at two this afternoon for an indefinite term, likely less than a week. It will report to the county board at the June session and may indict this week leading to arrests for the fall term of court.
