West Germany and France slow to back rapid secret talks with the Soviet Union on Berlin and a possible summer summit. Couve de Murville and Von Brentano favor care and Soviet leadership in negotiations, delaying the Western push.
Baltimore AP report says five persons were killed and several injured when a fire swept a Martin Co hangar where a seaplane was being painted. A Martin spokesman cited paint fumes igniting, with smoke hampering firefighters. Injured include John Johnson with second degree burns and James Holly with leg injuries. Holly reportedly blown from the seaplane.
Premier Nikita Khrushchev told American businessmen that the Geneva foreign ministers conference should succeed and that there would be no war between the United States and Russia. He predicted the U.S. would not remain behind in the arms race and spoke of increasing democracy in the Soviet Union as living standards rise. Khrushchev contrasted Western peace plans with Noah’s ark and said talks should continue until an agreement is reached. He also said he would visit Albania.
A speeding truck crashed into a taxi in Matsuyama Japan injuring none but slicing off parts of two houses and a fence two telephone poles and a store window. The driver Tasuo Shimizu aged 23 woke up at the scene.
A missing boater from California remains missing after a rescue of his wife who survived a capsized cabin cruiser on the Colorado River in Utah near Moab. Family members held hope the 63-year-old man would be found as searchers and a helicopter continued tracking the river’s dangerous rapids.
Congress weighs Hoffa's warning of a national strike if antitrust laws hit unions. McClellan says a bill applying antitrust rules to transportation unions may be introduced. Hoffa calls a "primary strike" across the nation, while Meany rejects union-wide backing and several senators urge swift action or caution.
New York authorities auctioned the city’s three transit power plants to Consolidated Edison for 125.83 million dollars. ConEd submitted the sole bid and the sale completed in about two minutes.
Republican State senators rejected Gov. Gaylord Nelson’s executive budget after about 15 hours of debate and speeches. The GOP passed a substitute totaling near 323 million dollars with 11 million for the state building fund, estimating first year spending at 163.2 million, about 200 thousand less than Nelson’s proposal. Democratic leaders criticized the move as an empty economy ploy. Republicans defended the substitute as honest and workable ahead of conference committee review.
A transport plane struck an Air Force barracks in southern Japan today, killing three people and injuring 145. The incident occurred at a northern W sna air base when the four engine aircraft of type W v2 Troop Carrier veered into the barracks. Air Force officials described the crash and rescue actions as ongoing.
A fire in Menomonie Wisconsin destroyed a supermarket near the downtown area. Damage was estimated at 190008 dollars by owner Don Williams, with small explosions noted after the blaze began in the basement near a refrigeration unit shortly after 3 PM Tuesday.
Harold Stassen easily secures the Republican mayoral nomination in Philadelphia with 36 530 votes, more than twice the combined total of rivals Ralph C. Morrone and Joseph A. Schafer, who are city committee members. He faces incumbent Democrat Richardson Dilworth in November.
A dynamite blast damaged a fuel tanker near a non union coal mine in Clinton Tennessee as part of a spate of harassment in the UMW organizing drive there. No injuries were reported in either blast and UMW denies involvement.
A deadly fire near Oslo claimed eight lives and left several injured. Authorities report the blaze broke out at a location described as west of HRergsberg, approximately six miles distant, with emergency crews responding quickly.
Rainstorms produced wide variance in rainfall across Oshkosh with gauges reporting 3.8 inches downtown and 2.76 to 2.86 inches at other sites. Flooding hit basements and streets as sewer pumps struggled while crews cleared catch basins. Power outages affected about 250 Wisconsin Public Service customers, with repairs underway and wiring hazards addressed by electricians. Fire crews responded to a fire after lightning struck a home or nearby tree near Howard Gauger in Winnebago.
In Tampa the judge urged appointing one or more women to the city parking board saying they are the ones involved in parking problems. He noted women drive to stores and handle parking issues while men are less present in enforcement matters.
President Eisenhower awarded the Medal of Freedom to John Foster Dulles, bestowing the nation’s top civilian honor while Dulles battles cancer and pneumonia. Maj. John S. Eisenhower delivered the medal to Dulles’ hospital room as Mrs Dulles accepted it.
Two tornadoes struck western Wisconsin Tuesday causing light damage with no injuries. One hit Grant County near Lancaster and harmed farm outbuildings while sparing the house, and the other touched Monroe County near Clifton with no ground contact reported. Heavy rains and hail accompanied the storms, and a separate flood threat hit Ontario as the Nickaboo River rose over its banks.
