A large brick building in Markesan’s business district burned early Sunday, forcing over 20 people to flee in night clothing. The fire caused about 150000 dollars in damage, leaving the structure a shell and prompting evacuation of nearby areas.
Police in Kansas City surround an apartment building and arrest Isaac Sanders, one of five inmates who escaped from Jackson County jail. Two other fugitives, Leroy Andrews and Eugene Walker, remain at large as authorities pursue leads. The escape involved overpowered guards with homemade ice picks and a climb from the 11th floor via the courthouse elevator.
A two car crash near Scranton Iowa Sunday night killed five people, four of them Omaha Nebraska students. Clareleavis Davis 33 of Iowa and his wife Alice 48 were injured. Alice died. Victims in the other car were Michael LaMendola 24 of Amsterdam New York Sally Hoever Storm Lake Iowa Cora Bees Ogden Iowa and JoAnn McCarthy Fort Dodge Iowa. Injured was Mary Ridder North Platte Nebraska. LaMendola a Creighton University senior medical student and the girls third year student nurses at St Josephs Hospital Omaha.
Washington reports that a House appropriations subcommittee, led by George H. Mahon, plans to recommend about 2.5 billion dollars in cuts to President Eisenhower's defense request of 36.2 billion. The move aims to curb spending without weakening military strength, while Eisenhower prepares a revised foreign aid request and appeals for public support.
Washington AP reports the Senate confirmed C. Douglas Dillon, former ambassador to France, as U.S. alternate IMF governor by voice vote. It also approved ambassadors Frances Willis to Norway, Robert Hull to Mexico, Walter McConnaughy to Burma, Joseph Farland to the Dominican Republic, Don Bliss to Ethiopia, and Wilson Blake to Ghana.
A concentrated fund drive in Oshkosh topped its minimum $750,000 goal and approved construction of a central Catholic high school to serve the community. Plans call for a $1.25 million complex with an auditorium cafeteria and gym, to seat about 1,200, with 1,000 volunteers contributing and a final tally expected to approach the total need.

An ironic note was added to the case file of three men detained for questioning in burglaries after a high speed chase in Reno. A policeman neighbor, a deputy sheriff nearby, and an FBI agent living on the same street highlight the local law enforcement proximity surrounding the incident.
