Charlotte Nash Nixon-Nirdlinger was acquitted of manslaughter in the shooting of her Philadelphia husband Fred G. Nixon-Nirdlinger at their villa in Nice. The self defense plea was upheld amid a dramatic, heat ridden trial with 1000 spectators and cheering supporters outside.
Fifteen Fox river valley cities will attend a June meeting to discuss municipal sewage disposition. The state board of health stream pollution committee will sponsor the gathering, to be held in Appleton or Oshkosh, outlining pollution reduction and feasibility of disposal districts. Cities include Fond du Lac E Berlin Omro Winneconne Princeton Oshkosh Neenah Menasha Appleton Little Chute Kimberly Combined Locks Wrightstown De Pere and Green Bay.
Berlin Wis Special to The Northwestern Joseph Streholski 28 Berlin drowns about 3 30 Tuesday in Lake Povgan at the Wolf river mouth when the boat he rocked capsized. Companion Thomas Olman rescued. The group towed by John Behm of Tustin behind a launch. Streholski sank after tipping the craft. He is survived by a widow and siblings. Funeral Friday at St Josephs with burial at Oakdenna.
Governor elect E L Lurvey of Fond du Lac was chosen here Tuesday as district governor for 1931 32. Lurvey has nine years in Lionism and previously served as Fond du Lac Lions Club president.
John Factor alias Jake the Barber, a suspected $5 million swindler, turned himself in to U S authorities for arraignment. British consul Godfrey Haggard will seek extradition to London. Factor defends his innocence and asserts his constitutional right to bail.
George Voigt, last American contender, is defeated by Syd Roper 1 up in the fifth round of the British Amateur at Westward Ho Devon. Voigt had beaten Bernard Darwin earlier. Americans have rarely won the title, with Walter Travis Jess Sweetser and Bobby Jones the only winners.
Thomas F. Wallace of Minneapolis opened the 11th annual conference of the National Association of Mutual Savings Banks reporting a surge of currency into savings banks unseen since the postwar period. He noted deposits totaling about 10 billion dollars from 13 million depositors and urged legislation to segregate savings from commercial deposits.
City council approved a resolution detailing irregularities in the water department. The document cites surplus money disposition, cancellations of $61,000 bonds, and the creation of an investigatory committee.
Edmund Kratsch of Milwaukee elected secretary at the Louisville meeting. J Frederick Palmer of Waukesha chosen director and Tuas Wiltot of Chicago named another officer as the association convened here today.
President Hoover invites post office department leaders to Rapidan for talks on reducing government expenses. The plan follows prior meetings with war and interior chiefs, targeting a multi year saving totaling about 17 million dollars. The postal service employs over 360,000 and runs a yearly deficit near 100 million dollars.
Berlin dispatch reports a relief expedition in Greenland found Prof. Alfred Wegener dead about 93 miles from his Eismitte camp. Eskimos wrapped the body in furs before the expedition arrived. Wegener led a German Arctic expedition last year and disappeared in November with one Eskimo and another companion.
Figures by the state tax commission show only a ten thousand dollar reduction in tentative mining property values in Dickinson county from last year. Last year's figure stood at three million three hundred thirty thousand dollars. Final figures will be released at a later date.
Fond du Lac Lions club president Lawson E Lurvey was chosen district governor for 1931 32 at a Tuesday session in Fond du Lac. Madison won the 1932 state convention by bidding against Marinette, with Manitowoc inviting the new governor to visit. Lurvey, city attorney of Fond du Lac for over 20 years, was born in Oakfield in 1880 and is a UW Madison Law graduate who began practice in Fond du Lac in 1905.
Chicago financier Alexander Legge, former chairman of the federal farm board, told Inland Party Press association publishers that wage and price reductions would backfire. He proposed raising price levels on the items that are abnormally low to offset costs, noting that interest and taxes are farmers’ largest expense and that farm land taxes now exceed rents.
Kiel Germany Germany staged a formal review for a small postwar naval display led by President von Hindenburg aboard the Koenigsberg cruiser to celebrate yesterday’s launch of the seftpack Deutschland. The lineup featured aging ships and a few modern 6000 ton cruisers, with ten destroyers and minor auxiliary craft, while Versailles Treaty bans left no warplanes in the sky.
In Geneva the League council debated limiting trained reserves and war materiel as part of a general disarmament treaty. Germany urged a detailed form on armament reserves while Britain and France favored a Tubular form aligned with the draft. Italy backed Germany’s stance and the issue was tabled until Friday. Spain expressed support for league collaboration and pledged closer ties with the organization.
Waino Kaponen, 21, shot his sweetheart Karina Takala, 20, then killed himself five miles north of Tron River. The bodies found by three children on their way to school. Police say Kaponen feared separation and that a theft warrant was due for him.
In Stevens Point Wisconsin baby Clara Wroblewski avoided breathing difficulty after swallowing a two inch screw lodged head down. Doctors successfully removed the screw allowing her to breathe normally again. In Madison Alvin F. Small a 63 year old architect faced an insane asylum commitment order for a charge involving a 16 year old from Columbia County.
The only opposition to Lawson E. Lurrey’s candidacy for Wisconsin governor was E. W. Mackey a Manitowoc Newspaper man. Mackey introduced by the Manitowoc Lions Club is prominent in state Elks circles having served two terms as president.
Stephen C. Bolles editor of The Janesville Gazette may enter the Republican primary to fill the unexpired term of late Representative Henry Allen Cooper. Bolles discussed Wisconsin politics with President Hoover's secretary Walter Newton and indicated he would likely run. Seven names circulate as possible candidates amid a tight conservative field and Prohibition issues.
Meteorologist Frank I. Coleman cautions Wisconsin and upper Michigan residents to protect plants and shrubs tonight as frosty conditions loom. A recent two day rainfall cooled the region causing temperatures to fall naturally.
Pontiac report says a woman, three days before her sentence for embezzling school funds, died on the operating table. She suffered acute appendicitis and died under anesthesia. Mrs Thibos and John E Parsons had pled guilty last week to an indictment charging embezzlement.
A major blaze in Carbonear Newfoundland destroyed the Hopkins boot and shoe factory J and J Maddock and Saunders Howell factories and W and J Moores fisheries plant. Five homes burned, unknown number damaged as flames leaped from midnight into daylight. Firefighters from St Johns aided with boats arriving to assist.
Merle Johnson, 25, declares he killed Mrs Carrie Bower 38 and her two sons after she asked him to end their lives. The ruse involved strangling the boys, beating them with a wrench, then shooting the woman. Johnson says he is sane though burned hands hint at tying ropes. Police report neighbors saw the couple at their Prairie Street home as a house fire followed an electrical bulb explosion.

Forecasts call for cooler temperatures near freezing in the northwest and light frosts in the east and south tonight, with similar patterns continuing Thursday.
