Former president Herbert Hoover issues a formal statement asserting he is not a candidate and seeks to place critical issues before the country. He says he has no interest except the platform and asks Lowden to draft the agricultural plank.
Washington says the tri power naval treaty between the United States Great Britain and France was ratified by the Senate after two hours of debate with no record vote. It governs gun and warcraft sizes and calls for information exchange on naval programs though some senators called it disappointing and ineffective. Senator Johnson of California urged that the agreement is flawed and meaningless.
Tomahawk Wisconsin reports a writ of prejudice against Municipal Judge Ellsworth C. Smith filed today by Mr and Mrs Fred Peterson and Ruth Peterson of Merrill. The three are charged with illegal voting in the Birch Spring election. Justice B O Jourdan will hear the case, continued for one week.
Newark reports show Governor Landon backed by the state Republican committee while Roosevelt's 32 Democratic convention votes are unopposed. Delegates split across districts with London and Borah contenders. Jersey justice fight draws attention over Hoffman and Fort. Montana Democrats and Republicans meet separately to name eight delegates each. New Mexico's six Democratic votes also noted.
Wisconsin Socialist Labor convention names Joseph Ehrhardt for governor Alfred Potter for lieutenant governor Abe Fisher for attorney general Charles Ehrardt for secretary of state and Adolph Wigsert for state treasurer. Delegates approved the party platform denouncing capitalism and urging workers toward revolutionary socialism as the path to end mass unemployment.
Gov Alf Landon spoke to about several thousand farm community residents and 29 high school graduates urging them to accept responsibilities with courage. He warned against prophets preaching despair and spoke from an improvised amphitheater audience.
A 48 600 worker strike on the Great Mexican National Railways collapsed after President Lazaro Cardenas publicly urged an end to the walkout. Strikers were ordered back to posts as the government warned they would lose labor rights if they did not return within 24 hours. Military and state authorities were instructed to enforce the decision.
The Wisconsin Rapids school board through its attorney denied admitting discrimination against 13 union teachers in contract nonrenewals. The common council rejected a union bid to oust six board members over alleged conspiracy against the Wisconsin Teachers' federation, an AFL affiliate. Brazeau rejected any concession and said the board maintains the union’s charges are unfounded.
State Sen. William D. Carroll of Prairie du Chien announced his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor. He outlines 16 reform measures including limit on subagency power, legislature control of state funds, home rule expansion, and returning local revenues for schools and taxes to local units.
Dr. F E Townsend testified before a house committee that his Townsend pension movement aimed at helping retirees and not to obtain quick cash. He rejected claims that he sought a national magazine deal or large financial returns beyond supporting his pension plan.
The Wisconsin Democratic nominating convention will be at Milwaukee Auditorium on June 13, 10 days before the Philadelphia national gathering. Delegates number 1,168 with candidates for governor and state offices to be named. James Hughes is keynoter. Rexford G Tugwell announced that the resettlement administration will proceed until the Supreme Court rules on constitutionality. Nowell said DC appeals court ruling against part of the federal relief program won’t curb Wisconsin and Minnesota activities. The Duluth homestead project aims to start about May 27 with $287000 total cost, $225000 construction and $62000 land. Headquarters are in Madison with hundreds of regional staff.
McAlester Oklahoma reports fresh officers and bloodhounds scouring brushy mountains near Cluxton after Claude Bevers, fugitive leader of the penitentiary posse, reappeared. Bevers vows to die rather than surrender as a dog pack led by Olid Harton quests the elusive felon amid a broader escape incident involving road workers abducted near Narrow Mountain.
Officials moved to craft new coal regulation and preserve relief efforts after the Supreme Court struck down the Guffey act provisions for wage and hour control and price fixing in the bituminous coal industry. A District of Columbia ruling also halted portions of the $4.88 billion relief program, with officials decrying the decisions and drafting measures to curb impacts and restore program momentum.
The senate labor committee reports the La Follette resolution to authorize a probe into labor spies. It moves to audit for a $15,000 appropriation as hearings reveal civil liberty violations and aggressive countermeasures by employers. The report cites 40,000 spies and stockpiled gas bombs and machine guns since 1933.
