Two Oshkosh men, Basler Flying Service operator and his son, were hospitalized with severe cuts after their Piper Tri-Pacer crashed in heavy fog near Lake De Neveu, southeast of Fond du Lac. The plane struck a utility pole during a forced landing while following car headlights.
Washington and abroad observed Armed Forces Day as America showcased new guided missiles and push ships. Basler aircraft piloted by Nonweiler and Basler owner were injured when the plane crashed after its directional radio failed near Elgin. both men were hospitalized after being pulled from the wreck.
The Associated Press reports two fatal accidents Friday night raise Wisconsin 1957 highway toll to 262, against 304 last year. Alex Bickow, 74, was struck by a car along Highway 17 near Rhinelander. August W. Sargatz, 51, of Holcombe, died when the auto he rode overturned on Chippewa County Trunk M, crushed him against the ground.

In Manorville New York Benny Hooper 7 entombed nearly 24 hours was saved by oxygen delivery and air pocket created by his jacket. A 39 year old constriction worker freed him after 28 hours of frantic work. His mother cried with joy as doctors reported him in good condition at Bay View Hospital Mas tic Beach. The rescue climaxed at 7 31 Friday night with a crowd shouting alive and prayers.
Washington briefs report the Senate Labor Rackets Committee plans to probe deals between Chicago consultant Nathan Shefferman and several unions beyond his ties to Dave Beck and the Teamsters. Kennedy says June 15 is possible to dig deeper, while Beck faces renewed friction as John T. O'Brien votes to challenge him for the presidency on a clean-up ticket. witnesses include Norman Gessert who invokes the Fifth Amendment 75 times. A bill to publicly disclose union financial reports gains sponsorship as the hearings wind down.
Tokyo dispatch reports from Communist Radio that about 100 Chinese perished when a Yangtze River boat burned last month. The broadcast, cited by Hyper Daily, calls it China’s largest river navigation disaster since liberation and dates the incident to April 26.
Rockford area reports a small plane piloted by John Erwin and his wife from Moline landed safely in a field seven miles south of the Wisconsin border after fog over Lake Koshkonong and surrounding counties. A Newark vagrant argued possession is nine tenths of the law. Chief Magistrate Nicholas Castellano ordered him to leave town in three minutes or face six months in the clinic. James McKelvery, 60, fled but returned, forgetting his gray fedora as the magistrate quipped that he had already lost a minute.
Sam Woodson recalls a UP interview about a life risking effort to save Benny, aided by his wife and sister, with fellow worker John Arambo. He describes hearing a message from God to reach the trapped boy, pushing through debris, uncovering Benny’s jacket and head, then freeing him as the boy groaned and eyes met his, the moment the rescue succeeded bringing overwhelming joy.
Dutch submarine chaser Utrecht reported echo sounding contact with a submerged object near a buoy believed linked to a sunken submarine in the North Sea.
