Washington, May 18. Huerta signals willingness to resign if a peace settlement is possible and the mediation delegates would oversee a broad settlement. The press notes the uncertain succession after Huerta and the likelihood that military leaders will not control the next government. Reports indicate Parks may have been killed and consuls report on guerrilla actions and foreign nationals.
Oyster Bay residents plan welcome events for Theodore Roosevelt returning from Brazil aboard the Booth liner. Uncertainty remains on quarantine transfer or train trip to New York, with villagers hoping he travels by road or rail to pass through local streets.
In Washington on a brief sightseeing trip, County Judge Fred Beginger and his wife of Oshkosh are touring the capital and plan to visit other eastern points before returning home. Special to The Northwestern. May 18.
Washington March 18 Colonel Goethals has been conferred the widest authority in enforcing and punishing offenses against the law in the canal area by President Wilson. The action places him in full control of enforcement duties and related penalties within the canal zone.
Reports from Galveston say Constitutionalists in Tampico plan to raise the sunken fed eral gunboat Vera Cruz for use as a warship. In Vera Cruz and surrounding areas, there was no confirmed attack as American outposts remained on alert and the armistice held.
A party of twenty five Minneapolis bankers and businessmen arrived in Green Bay this morning. They departed at noon by boat for Sturmeon Bay, the gentlemen being taken to Door County by the tun ders of an electric railway line to inspect the fruit and other industries of that county.
Minneapolis, May 18 year. Five of a nine person pleasure party were drowned when their boat capsized in the Mississippi River's northeastern section of the city. The dead include Mrs Ceto Justmann and two of her children. Also missing is one Justmann child. Survived are Buckholz, his wife, one child, and Frey Weber a Buckholz relative from Merrill Wisconsin. Only one body, a Justmann child, has been recovered.
In Minneapolis May meeting five national banks in the district signed the certificate of incorporation for the Minneapolis regional reserve bank. Northwest National Bank hosted the session with T. R. Wall vice president and E. R. Williams Oshkosh Commercial National Bank cashier among the signers. The signed articles of incorporation were nailed to Washington this afternoon.
Governor McGovern delivered Madison and Milwaukee addresses extending congratulations to Norway on the hundredth anniversary of its constitution. He praised Leif Erikson as the discoverer of America in Nordic history, contrasted with Columbus, and lauded Norwegian democracy, industry, and education. He envisions substantial Norwegian visitation and a $20 million centennial celebration budget, praising Norwegian-Americans in Wisconsin as stalwart citizens.
Aurora news details a violent incident involving Bernard Swenson who used a revolver and rifle during a funeral procession. The report notes Swenson confrontations on a road to a cemetery, a confrontation with his brother Bert and Sheriff Poust, and eventual capture after a prolonged standoff lasting hours.
In Lima on May 18 a group of 121 senators and deputies proclaimed a national congress and named Roberto Leguia acting vice president. Leguia, seeking asylum at the Indian legation, issued a manifesto to the nation through The Prensa as Peru’s political situation again tangled.

The Norwegian freight steamer Times, outbound from New York, ran aground near Carya fort reef off Florida on Friday. The Frednes, from Baltimore, later reported the ship found and signaled her. The Timex captain said his vessel was not in danger.
Washington May 16 W J Harrin of Georgia tenders resignation as director of the census to enter the Democratic race for Georgia governor. He will begin his campaign Saturday and join Goreevor’s bid after leaving the census post.
Charles R. B. Plitt, former Becker adviser, testified Becker urged an alibi for the night of a gambler’s murder. Plitt described Becker fearing “squealers” and suspected attempts to link Rose and the gang to the crime. He recounted meetings at police headquarters and the Tombs, plus Becker’s plea to secure a loyal defense.
The Stevens Arma company gold fob and DuPont Powder silver fob trophies opened at Winnebago Gun Club. A first match was postponed after an accident to a team member. Scores ranged from 65 to 18 across twenty-five targets with shooters including G Teuton, W J Glatz, J Baranowski, and O Oscar.
Fires two miles south of Carlton spread despite iron range firer departments efforts. Trains are halted as ties burn and rain is not expected soon, risking entry into the large timber. The underbrush is extremely dry after a week without rain. Mrs. Emma L. Bray returns home after wintering in Florida and Georgia.
A Neenah man died after being struck by a Soo passenger train last Saturday night. Survivors include two brothers George and Walter Ehrgott and three sisters Mrs Orrin Beattie Miss Helen Ehrgott and Miss Riva Whr wott of Manitowoc. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 2 PM from the parents home on Yan Street.
Crowds of depositors gathered at the Brookline Commercial and Savings Bank and the Midway Commercial Savings Bank in Chicago. The Brookline bank, owned by Joseph Ashurst and William Vosberg, closed its doors as police reported Ashurst punishing. Resources listed at 15000 with 1100 deposits and 40 pennies found in the safe.
Wisconsin Supreme Court upholds demurrer in the action by Mrs. Isabel Covault for 5000 damages against George P Nevitt, minor son of Charles Nevitt, over injuries from a Chapman store janitor opening a trapdoor near Monument Square. Court says minor cannot be held responsible for a servant. action dismissed.
The county W C T U convention opens tomorrow in Oshkosh with two sessions. Activities include reports, committee appointments, and papers such as Laws Relating to Women, with M J Fanning of Philadelphia as the convention orator and Wednesday rally services under the local union. Public invited.
Chief of Police Dowline showed unusual leniency this morning by releasing four men arrested for drunkenness and one for vagrancy. Noel Silvey of Stiles Wisconsin, the vagrant, was ordered to leave the city. The others, Joseph Dolan H Christensen Alfred Johnson and Katlsg Hanach, were discharged after brief detentions following arrests on Main Street Light Street and Martin Street late last night.
A body of an unknown man about sixty was recovered from Wausau lake near Wausau Wisconsin. The empty large pocketbook found in his pocket offered no clues to his identity and the body appeared to have been in the water for several days. Reverend Edward S. Smith sails for Washington DC to attend the triennial Military Order of Foreign Ware convention as Wisconsin delegate. He will attend the Lake Mohonk peace conference two days after the convention closing. He plans to be away two weeks.
Washington May 18 Republicans and Progressives mobilize to appeal to farmers in the 1918 congressional campaign. They argue Democratic tariff shifts dump nearly all farm products on the free list, oppose rural credits, and point to river and harbor spending as a stronger federal commitment than roads. Democrats in Congress fear losses. Wilson maintains strong support as new members back the president to survive.
A toddler stepped into the Mor mon Coulee highway near La Crosse. Engineer H T May on a motorcycle swerved to avoid the child and struck Tacob Mickacell, a picnic party member, causing fatal injuries.
The trial of Dr. W T Elam of J Joseph Mo for the murder of W Putnam Cramer a Chicago advertising solicitor in a hotel room here November 13 last was postponed to May 25 at the defense request. Elam was freed on a $10000 bond six days after Cramer’s shooting.
