The Wisconsin Republican Executive Committee is divided on how to fill the late Joseph McCarthy’s Senate seat. Governor Vernon Thomson has not decided whether to call a special election or to appoint, and indicated he wants statewide input before acting.
Pulitzer Prize winner Arthur Miller, husband of Marilyn Monroe, stood trial in federal court in Washington for contempt of Congress after refusing to name authors who attended 1939 Communist writers meetings. He pleaded innocent and was released on bail. maximum penalty could be two years in prison and $2,000 fine.
Patrolman James M. Mahoney notes a mobile No Parking sign in front of the Imperial Hotel on 2nd Street. He urges bolting or embedding the sign to prevent it being moved by passersby.
Washington reporters say the Senate Rackets Committee seized Norman Gessert, a cousin of Becks wife, at Ellensburg to serve a subpoena. Gessert is among four missing witnesses traced to Vancouvers border, tied to Becks tangled finances as Beck prepares for a possible suspension hearing. The panel also questioned attorney Alfons Landa about Becks financial dealings amid Teamsters scrutiny.
Grand jury in New York indicted James R. Hoffa vice president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and two others on six counts for conspiring to tap telephones at the Teamsters Union headquarters in Detroit. Bernard Spindel a wire tapper and Bernard Brennan president of Local 337 were named. The indictment says taps included conversations of officers and agents of related unions and that calls were divulged without author ity. Plea set for May 21 before Judge Walsh. Conviction could carry one year and a $10 000 fine per defendant.

Thomas Weyland and Sen Byrd Vice President Nixon and other officials watched Col Talbott operate a jet flight and ground crew in a live radio exchange The three jets flew 4500 miles from Condon Airport to join the celebration setting a non stop flight record of 1710 miles for F100 Super Sabre jets and refueled midair on the way to Los Angeles.
