Carl Schurz, former cabinet member and early Republican, dies at his New York home at 4 37 am after a battle with stomach illness. He had supported Greeley and liberal or radical causes before his passing. His son Carl L and daughters Marie Ann and others were at his bedside.
Agatha Edward kL Pretorius and Drs Jacobi and Strauss are named in the obituary for Carl Schurz who lived at 24 East Ninety-first Street. Born March 2 1829 in Lidiar Prussia he became a journalist and political figure in Germany then moved to the United States in 1852. He served as senator from Missouri from 1869 to 1876 and held roles in Lincoln’s era as minister to Spain and in Ulysses S Grant's administration. He championed civil service reform and supported Greeley, Hayes and Cleveland at various times.
London 14 British policy holders of Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York form rival camps aligned with D C Haldeman. They transfer policies to North British and Mercantile Insurance, filling papers and awaiting hundreds of applications by mail as Haldeman claims a majority. The move, disclosed after late Saturday night and Sunday morning, aims to leverage the transfer and sway remaining holders.

Assistant actuary J C Crawford testified before a Wisconsin legislative committee on dividend factors used by Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance. He cited 20.4 percent from mortality gains, 12.4 percent from expenses, and 4.13 percent from interest. He said annual death losses typically ranged from 65 to 76 percent of the fund set aside, and noted he knew of policies with higher losses than mortality tables. He explained the remaining gains were reserved as an emergency fund.
In St Petersburg on May Day Kuzmich commander of the port was stabbed to death by a workman at the new admiralty works after a dispute over working hours. The attack followed a May Day show in which over 200,000 workers joined protests while authorities prepared for further disturbances.
Charles M Smuther was arrested Saturday afternoon on charges of drunkenness and disorderly conduct and sent to the workhouse for ten days. Yease Farrer, an older attender, pleaded not guilty to a charge of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. He was found guilty this afternoon and committed to the workhouse for ten days.
A notice from Monitows Wisconsin describes a proposed joint rate by the Mann ing Sompany and Tinelop. It claims separate rates exist among Entwasonatie firms and demands freight rate terms for Northern and Central routes and a May timetable.
