Heavy contact near Bac Lieu in the Mekong delta wounded 16 South Vietnamese and one American. Viet Cong losses were 16 killed with 10 weapons captured. A US spokesman said forces were pinned for an hour before air strikes neutralized positions.
Bowler hats and rolled umbrellas were sent to Amsterdam for distribution by shopkeepers during British Week beginning Friday. The promotion aims to boost retail interest in London goods during the event.
A southbound Milwaukee Road passenger and mail train derailed near Waldo station early today. Eight cars left tracks. one Pullman overturned. About 38 passengers were believed injured as cars damaged a storage building containing fertilizer and fencing. Buses transported travelers to Milwaukee as cause remained undetermined.
President Johnson said Communist China aims to erode U S strength in Asia and vowed the effort shall fail. He told editors in the White House East Room that Washington will not abandon South Vietnam and urged unconditional talks, stressing a political solution and economic development for South Vietnam. He outlined three faces of the war and urged continued U S aid.
Madison AP reports 36 Wisconsin high schools in 31 cities will launch pilot vocational projects this September to develop programs in distributive education and job training. About 30 to 40 percent of non college bound students need special skills, with funds totaling 750000 first year and 1 million second year.
In Madison the Senate Education Committee unanimously recommended indefinite postponement of a bill banning Communist members from teaching or using state university facilities. The chair called the measure a terrible bill. A separate hearing backed a course on Americanism vs Communism, opposed by the state DPI official and Socialist Party leader.
At Leavenworth Kansas the first of eleven campaign medals was presented to Simpson Mann a 198 year old veteran who served in Troop F 5th U S Cavalry. James F Haile praised the ceremony as the men were honored for their actions on the Western frontier.
Mercy Hospitals 84 million expansion plans move forward with final specs set. Sisters Mary Regina and Brusk and Brust Milwaukee architects outline additions including four new beds, surgery wing, labs, X ray and admin offices. Remodeling adds psychiatric ward and expanded laundry, pharmacy and dietary departments. Completion hoped for 1987.
The Oshkosh Mercy Hospital expansion drive ended in victory at a school auditorium as pledges and gifts surpassed the $1.5 million mark toward the $4 million project. Volunteers hailed the result with applause and cheers, and officials said further gifts may come in after the campaign. Sister Mary Regina thanked supporters and promised continued progress as campaign leaders credited a team effort.
In Madison Wisconsin the Assembly narrowly rejected a repeal bill ending the colored oleomargarine ban and proposed a five cent per pound tax. The vote reflected dairy industry pressure and shifting Democratic support with some lawmakers miscasting votes. In the Senate a clash over a Vietnam campus speech occurred after a Roseleip Zaharski exchange regarding anti Communist bills.
President Johnson proposes consolidating the Weather Bureau and the Coast and Geodetic Survey into a new Environmental Science Service Administration. The plan aims to improve environmental science services and enhance warning systems for hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, and seismic seawaves. Reorganization Plan No. 2 of 1965 was sent to Congress and would take effect unless vetoed within 60 legislative days.
The Soviet Moon craft Lunik 5 hit the Moon but did not achieve a soft landing as Tass reported the 250 pound spacecraft landed in the Sea of Clouds at 10 10 p m EDT five minutes early ending its three day flight. The mission aimed to test soft landing tech for future manned lunar missions amid questions about retrorocket failures and competing American Surveyor efforts.
