The Common Council, in an 10 item meeting at City Hall, directed City Manager Ivar Van Akkeren to take the sewer assessment issue to the board of public works. They urged a review of charges with only token increases in recent years and argued assessments should reflect estimated costs.
President Gronchi called political leaders to conferences on solving a government crisis after Premier Antonio Segni resigned. Analysts name Amintore Fanfani or Mario Scelba as likely new leaders amid a fragile coalition. In elections, Segni's Christian Democrats gain turnout while other parties slip. In Appleton Wisconsin thousands filed past Sen Joseph R McCarthy’s bier at St Mary’s Catholic Church while over a thousand filled the church and street for a noon requiem high Mass. He died of a liver ailment and was buried with military honors beside his parents in St Mary’s Cemetery. The U S embassy said the American Air Force will station Matador guided missiles on Formosa for defensive deterrence against Chinese Communist buildup. The missiles can carry atomic warheads and fly over 650 mph with a several hundred mile range. The joint U S Nationalist China statement noted no current deployment date and that missiles would be managed by U S Air Force units. Algerian Rebels Kill 9. Nine people died in attacks across Algeria as rebels struck in five areas causing farms, burning property, and civilian casualties.
Washington sources say the Teamsters may push for the resignation or retirement of President Dave Beck and two vice presidents amid AFL CIO corruption charges. The Ethics Committee laid out personal use of funds and conflicts of interest, with hearings set for May 24 and Beck facing Senate Rackets Committee probes and an AFL CIO executive council trial on May 20.
