Washington report says President Eisenhower and senior advisers are unified against an income tax cut now. They favor possible reductions in specific excise taxes and depreciation timetable, while warning against rapid tax cuts or swelling deficits.
President Eisenhower will address a Republican dinner tonight honoring GOP members of Congress. His speech at a downtown hotel will be carried by CBS on television and radio from 9 30 to 10 p.m. EST.
Montreal police arrest a suspect in Canada's largest bank burglary tied to a two million theft of securities and cash. Nearly all loot recovered, but questions remain about the cash amount, participants, and whereabouts. The Brockville Trust and Savings Company burglary is linked, with at least fifteen thousand dollars reported missing.
Voters cast ballots in three states in contests for governor, Congress, and local offices. In Alabama the governor race drew 14 Democratic hopefuls with segregation as a major issue. Ohio saw seven Democrats vying for governor including DiSalle and Taft. Indiana featured GOP incumbents Harden and Brownson facing rivals with several others unopposed.
Skindivers and Coast Guardsmen staged an exercise off Milwaukee to simulate an attack on Jones Island. Frogmen planted flares on the Chesapeake and Ohio pier while a dummy ship, the Monica Smith, carried a secret cargo. Civil defense drills across the nation, led by FCDA head Leo Hoegh, mark Operation Alert 1958 with varied local participation.
Dr. Arthur S. Flemming, president of Ohio Wesleyan University, will be named secretary of health and welfare in President Eisenhower's Cabinet, succeeding Marion B. Folsom. Announcement expected Wednesday. Flemming was in Washington over the weekend and due back on campus this afternoon.
A plan to establish an official City of Oshkosh map to guide future street development is to be readied for introduction at a 4:30 p m council meeting. The city has until July 1 to assert plat approval jurisdiction over about three miles beyond the city limits through an official map or subdivision rules. The map outlines city streets highways and parkways and aims to control building in roadbeds. City engineers and planners see it as essential to city planning, though council may delay action for more study. Also on the agenda is a rejection of the school board’s request for two high school sites and 3 5 million for a 1 5 00 pupil high school and a 10 class building on the North Side. The council may instead approve up to 300 000 for additions to Read and Emmeline Cook Schools. Annexation of about 80 acres of potential industrial and residential land is noted. Mrs. Clarence Schmobe of Effingham reports finding an egg bearing a perfect numeral two etched on its shell. She wondered if the hen might be grading its own product as she examined the unusual marking.
MOSCOW The Soviet Union urged speed for a presummit foreign ministers conference while demanding more Communist governments sit in. Foreign Minister Gromyko said negotiations with Western ambassadors would continue as the bloc seeks parity and a broader Communist presence at talks, despite Western refusals. U.S. Thompson said the plan remains unchanged as he heads to Paris for NATO meetings after brief Moscow talks.
Thousands of Bolivians greeted U S Vice President Richard M. Nixon with cheers flowers and confetti on arrival from Paraguay The crowd dispersed Communists who tried to disrupt the welcome Three anti Nixon demonstrators two men and a woman were arrested The two mile high capital wore flags bunting photos of Nixon and Welcome Mr Nixon signs.
About 400 men from Barksdale Air Force Base were ordered out Monday night to shore up weakened levees along the Red River between Alexandria and Shreveport. East Point residents were evacuated and will not return until flood danger subsides. The Ouachita River rose to 17 feet at Camden and threatened major flooding, forcing dozens of families from Monroe area homes. Disaster specialists were mobilized along the Red and Ouachita rivers for emergency duty.
NATO foreign ministers urged continued effort toward a Soviet summit but warned against sacrificing substance for a propaganda show. Italy Denmark Canada Norway Portugal Belgium pressed for careful talks with Moscow, calling for conditions on nuclear tests and restraint on troop withdrawals. They doubted a summit could succeed while Moscow remains defensive and insisted no rushed agreement.
Floyd Rush of Milwaukee died at Berlin Memorial Hospital from burns suffered in an explosion and fire at his trailer near Pearl Lake late Monday. Neighbors found him outside in a dazed condition with clothing burned. The trailer and its gas stove setup were destroyed as Waushara County officers investigated and planned an inquest.
DIFFERENT CHICAGO The 1918 University of Chicago High School reunion will be held May 16 marking the 40th anniversary for the men and the 25th for the women, who may avoid admitting they graduated 40 years ago.
Washington reports a Democratic claim that President Eisenhower will resign before his term ends drew sharp rebuttals. Meade Alcorn called the idea undiluted nonsense while Sen. Knowland defended Eisenhower’s vigor. Butler suggested possible reasons for speculation but offered no proof. Eisenhower, speaking at a news conference, affirmed he would serve as long as able.
Lt. Gerald C. Stull 26 of Valdosta Ga sacrificed his life when he rammed his disabled F 102A into Lake Monona to avoid crashing into a residential area near Madison. Col John Pease said the pilot rode it down after the ejection seat failed to save him. witnesses saw the chute not open. Stull belonged to the 327th Fighter Group and radioed difficulties while approaching Truax Air Force Base. the crash site lies in the normal takeoff pattern. He survived by his wife a two month old child and his mother Mrs George F Stull of Beaumont Texas.
Chilean President Carlos Ybáñez urged Congress on Monday night to legalize the Communist party. He argued that legalizing the party would ensure the September presidential election would be as pure as possible.
