Five men escape as road collapses into Iron Mountain pit
A section of U S Highway 2 collapsed into a 90 foot water-filled pit of the abandoned Chapin mine in Iron Mountain Michigan yesterday. Five motorists escaped by hairbreadth including Irving Trudell Wesley Abeldi Rudolph Bartolomeelli Carlo Capra and Paul Perkins whose sedan was lost. About 80 feet of roadway sank as trains were rerouted and a crowd of 5000 watched while workmen prepared to recover the vehicles.

Three young athletes from Lake Mills and Monroe died after a car driven by Robert Hartwig of Lake Mills crashed into a tree on Highway 30 in Lake Mills Wisconsin around 10 30 p m. Clair M Mitchell of Monroe and Carol Barfknecht of Lake Mills were killed. Hartwig died later at Watertown hospital and Mitchell died there about 2 am. A 4000 pound powder blast at the E I du Pont smokeless powder plant in Carneys Point New Jersey injured two men near the glazing plant. John Roberts 29 Pennsgrove and R L Curtis Bridgeport suffered shock and were hospitalized. A two man crew escaped uninjured. No fatalities reported.
